Driver steals Jeep at Kenny Chesney concert then kills 10-year-old in crash, troopers say
A man driving a Jeep he’s accused of stealing at a concert venue crashed into a vehicle with a family of six inside, killing a 10-year-old child, Massachusetts authorities said.
Michael Escolas, 42, of Oxford, stole a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Aug. 24 from the parking lot of Gillette Stadium where Kenny Chesney was performing, WCVB reported citing Massachusetts State Police.
Escolas, while traveling at a high rate of speed, crashed into a Nissan Altima stopped at a red light in Plainville about 5 miles from the stadium, WFXT reported.
The vehicle was carrying two parents and their four children, the outlet reported.
All six of the family members were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, where a 10-year-old was later pronounced dead, WBTS reported.
“I’m so sorry, I have a 10-year-old boy, too,” Escolas told a WCVB reporter who asked if he had anything to say to the victim’s family.
Escolas is charged with motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence, nine counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and larceny of a vehicle, among other related charges, WBTS reported citing court records.
Attorney information for Escolas was not available.
Plainville is about a 40-mile drive southwest from Boston.
