Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic disqualification has been the talk of the town. The 29 year old wrestler was found to be overweight more than the permissible limit in her 50 kg freestyle wrestling category. The Indian Olympic Association issued a statement. “Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you [to] respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions at hand.”As per United World Wrestling’s rules, a wrestler has to go through two weigh-ins and failure to adhere to the rules will lead to his or her disqualification. Article 11 states, “If an athlete does not attend or fail the weigh-in (the 1st or the 2nd weigh-in), he will be eliminated of the competition and ranked last, without rank (Exception: cf. He proposes there should be an allowance of 1 kg in the second-day weigh-in and instead of the 8:30 AM timings for weigh-ins, it should be pushed to 10:30 AM.
