Three Michigan official visit storylines: Commitment watch, battles with Ohio State, more
Three storylines to watch as Michigan gears up to host five four-star recruits for official visits this weekend.
1. Can Michigan land a commitment?
Michigan will have a prime opportunity to grow its 2025 recruiting class this weekend as it gets set to welcome four-star Palatine (Ill.) EDGE Jaylen Williams. I put in an On3 Prediction in favor of Michigan back in November and feel very confident in that pick. With that said, Williams’ recruitment has been a bit of a rollercoaster. After an expected January commitment, Williams seemed to cool on the Wolverines as they transitioned from Mike Elston to Greg Scruggs to Lou Esposito, who finally became U-M’s permanent defensive line coach this spring. However, Esposito has done a fantastic job of building a relationship with Williams and locked him in for an OV this weekend after he was originally set to see Miami. Michigan is now in a great spot to seal the deal on his official visit.
2. Can Michigan threaten Ohio State for Davison and Dye?
Ohio State has the heavy lead for both Top 100 Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei running back Jordon Davison and Top 100 Elkhart (Ind.) Central EDGE Mariyon Dye on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. I would certainly agree that the Buckeyes have the advantage for both going into the weekend. However, Michigan is going to go all in on the pair during their respective stays in Ann Arbor. Ohio State already has a running back commit in Bo Jackson and is trending for another in Isaiah West. Michigan will pitch Davison on being ‘the guy’ in a run-heavy offense. U-M appeared to be completely out of it for Dye before an impressive push from Esposito. Now, this one could very well turn into a Michigan vs. Ohio State battle. Overall, Michigan will have the opportunity to create movement for both, but Ohio State’s not-so-secret sauce (NIL) gives me pause.
3. More clarity with Alofaituli and Holly
This weekend should give us a much better idea of where Michigan stands with Top 100 Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman offensive lineman SJ Alofaituli and On300 Alpharetta (Ga.) High EDGE Julius Holly. It’s been tough to get a true read on either prospect so far. Right now, Michigan is certainly in that top five or so group of schools for Alofaituli. However, there is no true feel on U-M’s positioning within that group or where he’s leaning in general. Holly’s recruitment just started to pick up last month. At one point Stanford was the leader, but SEC schools like Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss have all come calling. If academics and life after football are still important, Michigan will make a major move for Holly this weekend. But that’s now a big if.
