Auburn ‘has been relentless’ for 4-star RB Shekai Mills-Knight as decision day nears
Four-star running back Shekai Mills-Knight has set a date to announce his commitment.
Mills-Knight, who attends The Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn., will make his college decision on Saturday, Aug. 17, he told On3’s Chad Simmons.
He will choose one of Auburn, Ole Miss, Alabama, Miami and Tennessee.
“All the schools are great, and some of the schools are still really battling for me, but I know where I am going,” he told On3. “I am ready to make my commitment.”
Mills-Knight knows what he is looking for in a college.
“My decision is based on being at a place where I can see myself for 3-4 years, where I can get developed as a running back, where I can get a good education and where I have a chance to win a national championship,” he said.
Auburn has shown Mills-Knight how high of a priority he is for the Tigers.
“Auburn has been relentless in their effort to recruit me and how they would use me in the future,” he said.
Mills-Knight no stranger to Auburn
Mills-Knight took an official visit to Auburn in June. It was his second visit to the Plains this year. He previously visited in April.
“It was amazing,” he said of his official visit. “I got to see the culture again and had the same feelings coming back (as I did the first time). I feel like this staff is all about genuine relationships, which is really important to me. They care about their players. There’s just a good vibe here.”
Mills-Knight spent a lot of time during his visit with Auburn offensive coordinator/running backs coach Derrick Nix. The two have developed a good relationship throughout Auburn’s recruitment of Mills-Knight. And Nix made clear that Mills-Knight is priority.
“He really wants me,” Mills-Knight said. “He told me that he will get me to know all the schemes and concepts, which is crucial for my development. By the time the scouts are coming down and sitting me down for interviews, I’ll be ready. It will set me apart from others.”
Mills-Knight also met with coach Hugh Freeze.
“It was really real,” he said. “I feel like he’s one of the more down-to-earth coaches. He’s really transparent. He told me he needs me here. He wants me and likes the person that I am and that I fit the culture.
Early playing time opportunity at Auburn
Mills-Knight also would have a chance to compete for early playing time.
“I feel like being a bigger back in the room, it will set me apart from everyone else,” he said. “I can be a different type of back than the others. The room is more open now. They have two seniors leaving next year. I feel like I would have a good spot to compete.
“Just the culture, the vibe, the coaching staff, the relationships are really genuine for me,” he said. “I feel like that is important. They are definitely one of my tops.”
