Double-deer success on public land
Opener highlighted by a first and a dry-spell breaker

Well this C-Zone opener was one to remember! It was a smaller group this year with just dad, Knox and I. We hunted hard for four days straight and only saw a few does and fawn, and we also visited small lakes and decided to try our hand at fishing and managed to catch some rainbows.
On Tuesday morning (Sept. 24) we decided to sleep in and roll out to hunt around 8:30. Shortly after at 9:30, dad broke his 12-year dry curse and bagged a beautiful fork horn! This buck meant a lot to us and we were very blessed to have filled a tag, now let the work begin!
Later in the evening, we went out again on a search to see if our luck would stick to fill my tag and ran into a handful of does, and suddenly I saw another deer but this time, a buck.
I quickly grabbed my gun and couldn’t believe my eyes! Through the scope I saw was his massive head and horns above the brush. It was more of a difficult shot for me, but I gathered myself and pulled the trigger. The buck instantly dropped and I about lost it. This was my first ever C-Zone public land buck and he was a giant 4×4!

Dad and I shared the excitement, yet again, and then we suddenly realized we had more work to do quickly before the evening set in. This trip was hard-hunted, yet the most rewarding, and one I will never forget.
