FC Motown Defeats Philadelphia Union DS 2-0
By Jonas Weinmann
FC Motown was looking to get back to form in their home opener against the Philadelphia Union DS. After beating Atlantic City FC in their first game of the NPSL season, Motown gave up a late penalty kick to Jackson Lions FC to finish with a 2-2 draw in their second game.
In front of a rowdy home crowd at Drew University, Motown delivered, scoring two goals and silencing the Union while clinching its second win of the NPSL season. This match was dominated by Motown from the first whistle as they controlled possession for a majority of the match and outshot the Union. The first half featured lots of scoring chances for Motown, and they recorded numerous shots and shots on goal.
Finally, in the 34th minute Motown broke through.
Upon receiving the ball at midfield, Motown’s Nate Zimmerman, who is a freshman at Notre Dame, lost a Union defender and passed the ball upwards and towards the middle of the field for Maudwindo Germaine. Then Germaine rushed towards the ball, outpacing his defender and dribbling towards the net. Germaine slowed as he approached the goal, lost his defender by pulling the ball back behind him, froze the goalkeeper with a stutter step, and crossed the ball across the goal area line to Assane Ben Fall. The goal from Fall would give Motown a 1-0 lead, and this would remain the score of the game as it went into the second half.
The second half saw increasing intensity with players pushing and shoving each other in a tightly contested match. Several fouls and yellow cards were given out to players on each side during the second half. A similar, yet different, story played itself out in the second half for Motown as they controlled possession throughout most of the second half as they had in the first. However, they scored their second goal much earlier in the half than they had in the first with Fall knocking in his second goal in the 50th minute.
The goal was again assisted by Germaine who threaded the ball between two Union defenders and another Motown player before it reached Fall. As Fall received the ball, he dribbled and cut inside before firing a rocket past the Union keeper and into the bottom right corner of the goal. The goal put Motown up 2-0 and was the final goal scored in the match.
Former USL Championship players Chris Bermudez and Michael Knapp subbed on for Motown towards the end of the match, providing relief to the starters and giving the team two fresh sets of legs. Their substitutions helped the team close out the game and create opportunities on the offensive end, despite being unsuccessful in adding an additional goal.
As extra time in the second half expired, Motown recorded their second win of the NPSL season and their first home win of the season. Motown’s next home fixture is against FC Monmouth at 7:00 pm on May 25th.
