The “star of death” refers to an asterisk on a Costco price tag, indicating an item will not be restocked once it sells out.
This symbol is also known as “pending delete” among Costco employees.
One Costco customer took to the online forum Reddit to share a picture of what they discovered the “star of death” had been placed on.
In this case, it was the Kirkland Signature Praline Pecans, which weighs 1.13kg and cost $9.97.
Describing the product on the Costco website, they wrote: “Sure to impress, Kirkland Signature Praline Pecans originate from Mexico and are made in the USA.
“With the best quality ingredients, these fancy pecans are covered in a sweet praline coating, satisfying the sweet tooth.
The customer who shared the picture also added: “Hope a container will last me more than a week.”
The post quickly gained attention from other praline fans, generating 24 comments.
One person wrote: “First the chocolate-covered raisins, now the pralines…”
A second added: “I dare not buy these.”
Meanwhile, a third said: “Oh no! Those are fantastic. But it’s probably for the best.
“I will tear through one of these in just a few days if nobody stops me.”
The discussion sparked further chatter among customers, who shared their thoughts on Costco’s decision.
One commenter wrote: “I’ve noticed the Death Star pretty frequently, but then they come back.
Costco membership sharing guidelines
Costco has strict rules for membership use that shoppers must follow and they've been cracking down on offenders in recent years.
Primary Member Use: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. Sharing it for purchases is not allowed as the photo on the card must match the person using it.
Household Card: Each primary member can add one free household cardholder who lives at the same address. This person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per visit to Costco. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by the member.
Authorized Cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who doesn’t reside at your address. They will receive their own card and can shop independently.

“I think it’s more that they change vendors / UPCs / packaging or something similar, vs actually never coming back in stock.
“That being said, I’m going to pick some up just to be safe.”
A former employee chimed in: “As a former employee, I’m guessing these are getting new packaging per Costco’s new more environmentally friendly initiative.
“Also one thing I’ve noticed is that the star of death doesn’t mean it will never come back.

“Sometimes items come back after the death star.”
Others speculated the change was simply down to seasonal reasons.
One person wrote: “This one definitely seems like a seasonal thing now, like the jelly beans.
“I think most of the time, ‘star of death’ means permanently gone, but in many cases, like this one, it just isn’t being restocked immediately.
“But it will come back at a later date, maybe months to a year later.”
Another added: “Are they seasonal? I only buy them around the holidays, myself.”
