Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel on his Monday night episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Katy Perry revealed that the upcoming twenty-second season of the singing competition series would likely be her last season. Perry revealed her reasoning for leaving as wanting “to go see the world” and also hinted at making and releasing new music. However, she did not rule out ever returning in the future if the producers would love to have her back.
In the interview, Katy Perry also expressed her love for American Idol and how it connected her to America’s heart. She also joked that her fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie did not know of her plans to leave.
Katy Perry has been a judge on American Idol since 2018 beginning with the show’s sixteenth season, serving alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
However, Katy Perry’s time on the show was reportedly marred with controversies. She took a hiatus for some time in 2023 after coming under fire from fans for her harsh criticisms of contestants. This initially happened when she reportedly mom-shamed and made fun of contestant Sara Beith Liebe, which the contestant claimed in a now-deleted TikTok video (via Page Six).
Katy Perry never addressed the controversies she found herself in but she was defended by her fellow judge Luke Bryan in a 2023 Fox News interview from the harsh criticism she had been receiving.
