Deepmind’s AlphaFold is accelerating scientific breakthroughs
Deepmind’s AlphaFold AI system can predict the 3D structure of specific proteins at atomic accuracy, at scale, and in minutes. Proteins are the building blocks of life; they underpin every biological process in every living thing. Because a protein’s shape is closely linked with its function, knowing a protein’s structure unlocks a greater understanding of what it does and how it works. In doing so, AlphaFold provided a solution to a decades-long challenge and is helping to accelerate scientific research and discovery across the globe through its publicly available AlphaFold Protein Structure Database. Before AlphaFold, figuring out the exact structure of a protein could sometimes take years and millions of dollars, meaning scientists could only study a tiny fraction of them. This slowed down research of diseases and finding new medicines and treatments. Just one year after its release, AlphaFold had been accessed by more than half a million researchers from 190 counties and used to accelerate progress on critical real-world problems ranging from plastic pollution to antibiotic resistance.
