Donald Trump only mentioned LGBTQ+ people once in his RNC speech & it was negative
Despite the claim from the only out gay person to speak at the Republican National Convention this week in Milwaukee – that Donald Trump “doesn’t care” about anyone’s sexuality and gender – Trump mentioned LGBTQ+ people once in his over 90-minute RNC speech last night, and it was to promise an attack on LGBTQ+ rights.
“We will not have men playing in women’s sports, that will end immediately” if he wins the 2024 elections, Trump said about one hour and twenty minutes into his speech, after he had discussed immigration and foreign policy at length. The crowd cheered before he moved on to talking about America’s “once great cities.”

He did not mention anywhere in the country where men are currently playing women’s sports. He was likely referring to trans girls and women participating in school sports with other girls and women.

Elsewhere in his speech, Trump praised Hungary’s anti-LGBTQ+ Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
“Hungary, strong country, run by a very powerful, tough leader, he’s a tough guy,” Trump said of Orbán. “Press doesn’t like him because he’s tough.”
“He came out recently, they were asking him in an interview, the whole world is exploding, what’s happening, what’s going on. Viktor Orbán, prime minister of Hungary, very tough man, he said, ‘I don’t want people coming into my country and blowing up our shopping centers and killing.'”
Donald Trump wasn’t the only person to mention trans student-athletes at the RNC last night. Eric Trump denounced “male athletes, guys my height, six foot five” who “are swimming in women’s sports” and “destroying the dreams of young girls who have trained every minute of their lives.”
These speeches come just months after the Biden administration issued new rules strengthening protections for transgender students, although those rules didn’t mention athletic participation.
Other speakers at the RNC – including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) – have brought up their opposition to trans rights. Greene accused President Joe Biden of putting the Transgender Day of Visibility on Easter, which isn’t true, and said that “there are only two genders… made in God’s image, amen.” DeSantis attacked “gender ideology” and said that it was hurting the military.
In 2020, anti-LGBTQ+ activists were complaining that they couldn’t get the Trump-Pence campaign to discuss their issues. In the four years since then, 25 states have banned gender-affirming care for trans minors, and 24 have banned or restricted trans students from participating in school sports.
