West Hartford Seeks Funds To Help Apartment Developer

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Local officials have greenlighted a state grant application to help the developer of a proposed 70-unit apartment/mixed-use building on New Parke Avenue. The West Hartford Town Council, at its last meeting Feb. 25, unanimously approved a vote allowing West Hartford Town Manager Rick Ledwith to seek up to $690,000 in state brownfield cleanup funding. Those funds are from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development's Brownfield Municipal Grant Program. If the town successfully earns the grant, it would help clean up 579 New Park Ave., which is owned by Hexagon New Park LLC.Hexagon once leased the property there to Gozzo Design & Remodel LLC, but it now plans to redevelop the site by building a "mixed-use, transit-oriented development project," according to the resolution approved.Gozza appears to have moved to another location in town, namely Talcott Road.Of the 70 residential units, 30 percent will be set aside for affordable housing, which is seen as a key goal in West Hartford's greater goal of improving housing stock in town. The approved resolution also gives Ledwith the authority to accept the grant and execute any assistance agreements with the developers.Ledwith said the grant application builds "on our continued commitment to revitalizing underutilized properties and fostering economic growth."He said brownfield remediation "brings with it new opportunities for investment in our community and addressing environmental concerns."Ledwith said the grant would fund the preparation of 579 New Park Ave. for development, namely the remediation, abatement, and demolition of the existing property.West Hartford Mayor Shari Cantor thanked town staff for working toward developing properties like 579 New Park Ave.For the minutes of the Feb. 24 West Hartford Town Council meeting, click on this link. For the approved resolution regarding brownfield grants for 279 New Park Ave., click on this link. The article West Hartford Seeks Funds To Help Apartment Developer appeared first on West Hartford, CT Patch.
