In a match with massive playoff implications for both sides, New Jersey United AC came out victorious in a 2-0 win against Syracuse FC. The win marks their fifth of the season, holding their opponents scoreless in each victory. The New Jersey side now sit on 15 points, one shy of second place and four shy of the top spot.
In the reverse fixture against Syracuse FC earlier this season, New Jersey United came away with a 3-0 victory. However, mirroring the outcome of the previous game, the first half also ended scoreless on New Jersey United’s home turf. When the second half got underway, United struck quickly with a goal by Diego Navas, which marked his fourth of the season. The opportunity came through multiple shots from different United players until it ultimately landed at Navas’s feet.
“Once Merdi [Nkiliko] made the first attempt, and Max [Barboto] fired the second, I put myself in a position to score once the ball bounced off the post and back to me,” Navas said. “I went in with a purpose: to put my team up 1-0.”
The goal now sees Navas stand alone as the second leading goal scorer in the North Atlantic Conference.
While Syracuse was desperate to find an equalizer, their offensive commitment left them vulnerable on the defensive side, which gave New Jersey United a plethora of chances. However, it wasn’t until the 90th minute where United all but secured the three points thanks to a goal by captain Sean Cadigan. The goal marked Cadigan’s first of the season.
“The team was able to gain three big points at home against a solid opponent,” Cadigan said. “We are proud of what we have accomplished so far this season while looking towards our next couple of games and the playoffs.”
New Jersey United still has two games remaining on their regular season schedule. United will host the New York Shockers next week and then travel to Valeo FC to conclude the North Atlantic Conference regular season. New Jersey United can finish as high as first place or as low as fourth place depending on their own results and other results around the North Atlantic Conference.
As a new expansion team entering the North Atlantic Conference for their first season, the job is still far from over, but there are many smiles surrounding New Jersey United Athletic Club.
