ANALYSIS: Examining the Miami Hurricanes’ remaining recruiting needs in the 2025 class
Miami already has 20 commits in its 2025 recruiting class, but there are still a handful of positions at which the Hurricanes are hoping to add talent before signing day.
So let’s take a look at Miami’s remaining recruiting needs in the 2025 cycle.
Miami coaches should be more than happy with their offensive line, tight end and quarterback positions in this year’s cycle, although the staff would certainly make room if a top player suddenly showed significant interest in the Canes. Where Miami still needs to add talent? Here is my take:
Receiver
Miami is still in play for five-star wideout Jaime Ffrench, who will announce Aug. 30, and should have a strong chance to flip local four-star Florida receiver commit Joshua Moore from Florida this fall if the Hurricanes produce on the field. But the Hurricanes currently only have one receiver pledge (four-star Alabama wideout Daylyn Upshaw) in the class and need to add at least two more before signing day to give themselves some breathing room.
Miami is also continuing to pursue five-star Oregon receiver commit Dallas Wilson, who the Hurricanes hosted for an official visit earlier this summer and marked as a massive 2025 priority last fall, although I believe the Hurricanes’ chances for him will rest heavily on their offensive success this season. Miami also moved quickly to offer former four-star Ole Miss commit Jerome Myles following his decommitment in late June.
I’d expect Miami to make some very aggressive moves for receivers this season, especially if the offense has the success many are hoping it will.
Defensive line
Miami currently only has one true defensive line commit in local three-star defensive tackle Donta Simpson, although four-star ATH Herbert Scroggins III could be a stand-up EDGE or JACK at the college level. But Miami is still working to land additional defensive line talent after signing an elite defensive line class a season ago.
Miami is fighting hard to land Five-Star Plus+ defensive tackle and No. 1 defensive lineman Elijah Griffin, who will be hard to pull out of Georgia and is expected to announce this fall. Miami is also continuing to fight for four-star defensive lineman Iose Epenesa, the younger brother of AJ Epenesa, although it’s beginning to look like Iowa will have a particularly good chance to land the massive legacy recruit. Iose’s father and brother both played for the Hawkeyes, although Miami has been a major contender for much of the year.
Miami is still playing the long game and chipping away at four-star Michigan commit Nate Marshall and hopes to have a chance to flip him this fall. The Hurricanes chose to pass on local defensive tackles Randy Adirika and Floyd Boucard, who respectively committed to Penn State and Oklahoma this summer, and couldn’t seal the deal with three-star Georgia Tech commit Derry Norris Jr. in June. Miami also cooled a bit on four-star Florida State commit Myron Charles but is still communicating with the defensive tackle.
Defensive back
Miami already has a good defensive back class between four-star safeties Hylton Stubbs and Amari Wallace, four-star cornerbacks Jaboree Antoine and Chris Ewald and do-it-all defensive back Timothy Merritt, but the Hurricanes didn’t enter the 2025 cycle hoping to land a good DB group: they wanted to land an elite DB group.
Miami set out with a massive focus on defensive backs in this year’s class (similar to the focus the Hurricanes had on the defensive line in last year’s class) and has already nabbed some high-profile talent, but Miami missed landing Five-Star Plus+ cornerback DJ Pickett’s initial commitment late last month. The Hurricanes will continue to fight for Pickett until signing day and could still flip him down the line, although LSU and Corey Raymond won’t make it easy. Top-100 cornerback Ben Hanks Jr., another local Miami target, is expected to commit to Florida Friday, and four-star safety Bryce Fitzgerald is still deciding between Miami, Florida, Florida State and LSU ahead of his Saturday decision.
Pickett would obviously be the biggest prize, and Miami likely missed on Hanks. Fitzgerald’s recruitment is expected to remain open after he commits.
Other Miami positions
Miami doesn’t NEED another linebacker or running back in the class, per se, and is very happy with its three linebacker pledges and Girard Pringle at running back. But if a player like four-star linebacker Christian Jones or local four-star running back Byron Louis wanted to commit to the Hurricanes, Miami wouldn’t be opposed.
Louis, who is still split between Miami and Florida State, is set to announce a decision in September, but the Hurricanes should be happy with their running back class regardless of where he chooses. Miami doesn’t have a problem taking one running back in the class given its current depth at the position, but if Louis picks the Hurricanes, Miami will welcome him to The U.
