Choosing the right walking shoes is critical for maintaining foot health and comfort, especially if you're walking long distances, says Miguel Cunha, DPM, board-certified podiatric surgeon and founder of Gotham Footcare. A proper walking shoe, first and foremost, should feel comfortable—that means it should provide plenty of cushion, stability, responsiveness, and breathability. With thousands of shoe models on the market to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to choosing a new pair, though. We tested some of the most popular walking shoes and asked foot health experts to weigh in on why they'd recommend them. Read on for our top picks.What Healthcare Providers Want You to KnowChoose the right size and fit: Choosing a shoe that fits properly is crucial for preventing discomfort and injury, Cunha says. Even if you think you know your size, have your foot measured with a Brannock device for both length and width.
