Summer Sizzles With Pride In Doylestown Borough
DOYLESTOWN BOROUGH, PA — From Main Street to Pine Street, East State Street sizzled with pride on Saturday.Despite the excessive heat and temperatures approaching the century mark, hundreds showed up for the fifth annual Pride Block Party organized by Discover Doylestown and Doylestown Pride.Cold water bottles and hand scooped ice cream from Evolution were the staples of the day as crowds of people checked out an expanded number of vendors, which filled the street from Lilies of the Field to Posh Hair Design.Spinning the wheel at the Doylestown Hospital booth.A band from the Doylestown School of Rock performs. At one end of the street, the “Proud Allies” from Doylestown Health were taking part in their first Pride Block Party spotlighting the hospital’s cancer programs. Nearby, representatives from the Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle were inviting visitors to make their own rainbow bracelets using boxes of colorful beads. Also making their first appearance at the block party were representatives from the newly-opened Resilience Resource Center in Huntingdon Valley. The center’s mission is to foster and build resilience skills in the LGBTQ community by providing accessible mental health services, fostering safe space educational environments and teaching career skills.Fourteen new vendors joined this year’s event with an expansion down Pine Street. The day also included three live musical acts and a Drag Queen contest. Pride flags were everywhere turning the block into a rainbow of color, diversity and inclusion. And live music filled the east end of the block where musicians from the Doylestown School of Rock jammed out on stage and even had some people dancing in the street despite the warm temperatures.Kris Boger, the president of Discover Doylestown, which organizes Pride Month activities in Doylestown, was keeping it cool in the shade and happy to see the turnout despite the spiking temperatures.Volunteers from the Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle offered a chance for visitors to make their own rainbow bracelets.“With the temperatures we were concerned all week long with the weather. Earlier in the week they were calling for a greater chance of showers and thunderstorms,” said Boger. “But after talking with its vendors we decided to move forward with its plans.”Boger beamed with pride as she remembered the first Pride Block Party five years ago and how it has grown to become an annual event in Doylestown.“This is big,” she said of the fifth annual Pride Block Party. “We have 41 vendors. We have three musical acts. This is something I’m most proud of in all of my volunteer efforts throughout the year.”The block party is part of a month long series of events celebrating pride in Doylestown. The multi-day event also featured a series of film screenings, music day, and various pop-up events and celebrations throughout the community. Doylestown Pride Month concludes with a pride-themed worship service - Love Has Broken Down the Walls - on June 23 at 10 a.m. at Salem Church and a sold-out Drag Brunch at the Hattery at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.The crew from the Michener Art Museum offered a chance to win museum passes, art supplies and handmade button. The article Summer Sizzles With Pride In Doylestown Borough appeared first on Doylestown, PA Patch.
