A win tonight and we get a parade! This could be it, the moment we have waited for. If the New York Liberty defeat the Minnesota Lynx tonight, they will be the WNBA champions, the ultimate winners in the league’s fabulous season.
After Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu’s late game heroics two nights ago, the Liberty are up, 2-1 in the best-of-five series. A win tonight ends the W’s magical season and would be the first pro basketball title in New York since the 1976 New York Nets with Doctor J won the ABA championship. A loss and it’s back to Barclays Center for Game 5, a win or go home game for the ages that would begin at 8:00 p.m. ET.
But Sandy Brondello and her team would prefer getting things done Friday night in Minneapolis. A Game 5 in New York would be dramatic but this is the sixth time the Liberty have gotten to the Finals in their 28-year history and the second time in two years ... without winning it all.
There could be some local drama tonight. Game 4 should end just as the Nets-Raptors preseason game is emptying out of Barclays Center. A ready made crowd for an impromptu celebration on the arena plaza ahead of the parade!
From Brian Fleurantin’s preview
WHAT: For the Liberty, the ability to make good decisions, find those pockets to score, and get to the paint will be of the utmost importance. Sabrina Ionescu has made great decisions since Game 1 and has been playing with a poise and determination as she continues to adjust to the excellent Minnesota defense.
For the Lynx, could playing at a faster tempo help some? In the second half, it took them a lot longer to get into their sets and they found themselves deep in the shot clock at various points in the fourth quarter.
OUT FOR NYL: All clear for the Liberty.
OUT FOR MINNY: Alanna Smith is dealing with a back injury, but she’ll be out there.
Moving on...
TIME: 8:00 p.m. ET
OPPOSITION: Minnesota Lynx
TUNE IN: ESPN on TV.
