Swim at your own risk: Rough surf expected at RI beaches
NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — With local beaches having fewer or no lifeguards on duty post-Labor Day, those looking to squeeze the last drops out of summer are warned to use caution while swimming.
That's especially true for this weekend, with an offshore storm expected to kick up large waves and rough surf at ocean-facing beaches. There will be the potential for dangerous rip currents on Friday and Saturday.
According to the R.I. Department of Environmental Management, there will be limited lifeguard staffing and reduced swimming areas at Scarborough North and South, Misquamicut, East Matunuck, Charlestown Breachway, and Roger Wheeler state beaches.
East Beach, along with many city and town beaches, will no longer be staffed with lifeguards.

Rip currents occur when large waves crash onto the beach, then the water recedes with a force strong enough to pull even the strongest swimmer out to sea.
If you’re in the water and get caught in a rip current, don’t try to fight it. Instead, swim parallel to the coastline until you’re able to turn back toward shore.
If you’re planning to watch the waves from the shore, make sure you’re doing so from a safe location. Stay off the rocks and jetties, since they can become slick, and large waves can sweep you into the water.
