Maldives Bans Israeli Passport Holders Amid Escalating Israel-Hamas Conflict

The Maldives’ Decision to Ban Israelis
President Mohamed Muizzu has been vocal about his disapproval of Israel’s military actions in Gaza. He explicitly referred to a recent strike on Rafah that resulted in the tragic loss of at least 45 Palestinian lives. Muizzu announced the travel ban and the establishment of a special envoy to assess Palestinian needs. He also organized a fundraising campaign for Palestinians and a statewide march with the slogan “Maldivians in Solidarity With Palestine.”
“Together with the Government and people of Maldives, I call for an immediate ceasefire, an end to violence and unhindered humanitarian access,” Muizzu posted on X last week.

This policy aligns the Maldives with other nations that have imposed similar travel restrictions on Israeli passport holders, including several Middle Eastern and North African countries. These countries do not recognize the State of Israel and, consequently, do not allow its citizens to enter. The Maldives’ stance further cements its position within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which has seen its member states take similar measures in the past.
What this Means for Israeli Citizens
The archipelago’s minister for homeland security and technology announced the announcement during a news conference. He emphasized the Maldivian government’s commitment to taking action in protest against the Israel-Hamas war. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since advised Israeli citizens to avoid traveling to the Maldives and for those currently in the country to consider leaving, citing difficulties in assisting in case of any distress.
