17K Power Outages, Trees Down After GA Storm

GEORGIA — More than 17,000 people were without power statewide, and trees were down in metro Atlanta, after a strong storm system rolled through Georgia overnight. The National Weather Service on Wednesday told Patch that no reports of tornadoes or hail have come through its office, but meteorologists have been notified of straight-line wind damage to trees. As of around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, 17,127 customers were without power, according to the online tracker poweroutage.us. The majority of the outages were in north Georgia, according to the digital map.Cherokee County, closest to metro Atlanta, had outages totaling 2,489. In DeKalb County, 2,418 customers were in the dark, the most significant amount in the metro.Though the main storm has moved out of metro Atlanta, NWS meteorologist Sid King said clouds were building along the backside of the system. This leaves a 15-20 percent of light showers throughout Wednesday afternoon in the metro. However, with the anticipated 15-25 mph winds and up to 35 mph wind gusts, unsecured objects can still be tossed around an area.No severe hazards are expected with the showers, King said.Clouds will linger during the nighttime, but rain chances will dwindle down to 10 percent before midnight, he added. In far north Georgia, the NWS predicted a light rain-snow mixture on Wednesday night.A wind advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday for north and central Georgia.Strong winds blew through areas far north and west of metro Atlanta with the overnight system. King said an inch of rain dropped in most areas."We're still gathering reports of downed trees and damage," he said early Wednesday. With Georgia facing dry conditions in the past week, and the Georgia Forestry Commission reporting hundreds of wildfires in that timeframe statewide, King said the rain has moistened some of the finer fuels and helped to mitigate wildfire concerns. But, he noted that winds could begin to cause a drier atmosphere.North and central Georgia could be dry through Friday before a 20 percent chance of light showers early Saturday. The probability of rain will increase to 60 percent by Saturday night into Sunday morning.King said the less than severe thunderstorms are expected to stay south of metro Atlanta, with a half to three-quarters of inch of rain anticipated into early Sunday. As for temperatures, Georgia is teetering on cooler weather Wednesday. Highs may be in the low 60s before the temperature plummets to around freezing (32 degrees) in metro Atlanta, King said.Thursday may usher in the coolest afternoon of the week with temperatures in the mid-50s. King said Friday low temperatures could sit in the mid-30s and high temperatures in the mid-60s. Saturday could be heat up to around 70 degrees, King said. The article 17K Power Outages, Trees Down After GA Storm appeared first on Atlanta, GA Patch.
