Revamped Former A&P Warehouse In Jersey City Seeks Artists, Businesses

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A former A&P warehouse in Jersey City has a new name and a new mission to support artists while also attracting commercial tenants. The newly christined Arts & Powerhouse Building at 130 Bay St., recently renovated by Kurshner Companies and KABR Group, announced last week that they've dedicated $250,000 to showcase works by Jersey City-based artists. The building also recently kicked off a search for new commercial tenants. The building is located in the city's Powerhouse Arts District, named for the old powerhouse building — located a few blocks away —that once provided electricity for local train systems.Past And FutureThe building at 130 Bay St. was originally constructed in 1913 as the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company Warehouse. The six-story landmark has undergone a $30 million renovation that preserves its historic character while introducing modern work environments and retail settings for today’s businesses, the developers said this week. The redevelopment offers up to 135,000 square feet of flexible, loft-style office, commercial, and retail space, "blending restored industrial elements with contemporary design and amenities," the developers said in a release. "Commercial spaces range from 4,000 RSF to 100,000 RSF, featuring open layouts, up to 27-foot ceilings and access to a 10,000-square-foot rooftop amenity deck with panoramic views of Manhattan."The mixed-use building has already attracted tenants to its ground-floor retail space, including Rumble Boxing, Daily Provisions, Spear Physical Therapy, and One Medical, an Amazon company.CBRE Vice Chairman David Opper and First Vice President Conor Dolan are overseeing leasing efforts for the property.“The A&P Building brings a level of character and authenticity rarely seen in Jersey City's office and commercial market," said Adam Altman, Managing Member of KABR Group. "With its industrial bones, loft-style layouts, and a setting that reflects the neighborhood’s creative roots, it offers an experience more akin to Manhattan’s Meatpacking or Flatiron districts.”The building is within walking distance of the Grove Street, Newport, and Exchange Place PATH stations, as well as the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. The building is across the street from a planned 550-seat Provost Square Performing Arts Theater, which will serve as the permanent home of The New Jersey Symphony. To launch leasing efforts, the developers hosted an exclusive art exhibition last Thursday in collaboration with the Long Meadow Art Residency, featuring works by artist Daniella Portillo. Kushner Companies is also building three projects in Journal Square and another on Bay Street.Find out more about the building here. The article Revamped Former A&P Warehouse In Jersey City Seeks Artists, Businesses appeared first on Jersey City, NJ Patch.
