Denton Diablos FC Defeats Laredo Heat SC 1-0
By Denton Diablos FC
On a sweltering June Saturday evening, the top two teams in the Lone Star Conference came together in Denton, Texas at Texas Woman’s University. In front of a crowd just under 500 people, the conference-leading Laredo Heat SC brought their 4-0-1 record into Denton after defeating Fort Worth Vaqueros FC on Thursday night.
In what was one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the Lone Star Conference season, the Diablos wasted little time in establishing possession and control of the game. In spite of numerous early chances, the Laredo Heat held on to the 0-0 scoreline until the 35th minute. That’s when David Krumov found himself on the end of a Charles Newberry flick off a header. With little time and no space, he knifed between two defenders to finish the first-time shot into the back of the net and secure a 1-0 lead for the Diablos.
The first half came to an end with the Diablos in comfortable control in both the time of possession and passes completed stats as well as the score line.
The second half would turn out to be a completely different game as Laredo shifted their formation to drive more numbers forward and high press the length of the pitch. Martin Dominguez made big save after big save to preserve the tenuous 1-0 lead. As time wound down, the Laredo Heat’s pressure only intensified until stoppage time. Dominguez saved his best for last, turning back a point-blank header and maintaining the 1-0 lead.
As the referee blew his whistle after over five minutes of stoppage time, a wave of elation rolled over the Diablos players, coaches, technical staff, and fans.
“I was proud of the boys and their effort today,” Diablos head coach Ben Clarvis said. “Very hot day, quality opponent, a lot on the line, and we got the right response from every player. We take it one game at a time, but it feels good to be back at the top of the table.”
The win moved the Diablos to 14 points and one point ahead of Laredo in the Lone Star Conference standings with four games to play. Denton’s record now stands at 4-0-2.
The Diablos will welcome the Lubbock Matadors to Denton on Thursday, June 20 in their final regular season home game.
