Coach’s take on Miami four-star IOL SJ Alofaituli: “They’re getting a humble kid who really just loves football”
With the Miami Hurricanes landing a commitment from Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman four-star interior offensive lineman SJ Alofaituli Friday morning, the connection between the two programs continues to strengthen.
While the distance between Las Vegas and Coral Gables may be over 2,500 miles, the Canes have made the Sunshine State feel like a second home for the Gaels.
“It’s great, and there’s a pretty big connection between us and the state of Florida itself,” Bishop Gorman head coach Brent Browner said. “Whether we are playing teams in Florida or have kids that are going to Miami, it’s just exciting for him and his family.”
Over the last three years, Alofaituli has been a key piece of Browners’ offensive line at Bishop Gorman. He credits that to his work ethic and versatility.
“He’s just a constant worker,” Browner said. “Just a down-to-earth kid who just grinds and really enjoys playing football. He can do a lot of different things. We could put him on the defensive line, and he would be an All-American defensive lineman. Just a heck of a football player in general.”
One of Alofaituli’s first starts for the Gael’s as a freshman was against Miami Central, where he was tasked with guarding Hurricane standout defensive lineman Ruben Bain. Browner says that is when he knew the 6-foot-0.5, 290-pound prospect had the potential to be special.
“His first big game was out in Naples as a freshman, and he played against Ruben Bain,” Browner said. “I think that was his first start. That’s a pretty tough first start, and that’s not an easy task. That game you could just tell how good he was that early and just how good he could be.”
While at Bishop Gorman, the Miami commit has played multiple positions across the offensive line. Browner believes he will play center at the next level when he arrives in Coral Gables.
“In college, I can see him being a center,” Browner said. “He’s been excellent at both guard and center for us, so I think at that level he will be excellent too.”
Under the guidance of offensive line coach Alex Mirabal, Browner believes the sky is the limit for Alofaituli.
“Just great and constant communication with those guys,” Browner said when asked about the thriving relationship with the Hurricanes staff. “Genuine interest as men too, and obviously just the connection because we have guys who have played for them before. We kind of know their input and take on things. Having our guys who have played for them tell us that they’re genuine guys who really take care of us down there is great.”
In all, Browner believes Alofaituli will be able to have a large impact on the Hurricanes on the field, in the locker room, and beyond.
“They’re getting a humble kid who really just loves football,” Browner said. “Loves his family and a captain for us the last couple of years. He’s a tremendous leader and a guy that’s going to fit in the locker room really well. With those guys and grind.”
