July Miami Hurricanes Player Performance Index top 30 deep dive: No. 12 P Dylan Joyce
CaneSport is breaking down the top 30 Miami players on the roster based on projected production, and today we’re at No. 12, Dylan Joyce.
THE BIG PICTURE
Joyce enjoyed a standout freshman year with a solid 43.8-yard punting average. He has a strong leg and excellent consistency. You have to think in Year 2 he will be all the better for the experience. Perhaps the one thing Joyce can improve most is hang time off last year, but the reality is Miami should be winning the hidden yards battle in most of its games this year behind Joyce’s solid leg.

THE ANALYSIS
Joyce isn’t Lou Hedley … yet. But fans sure didn’t feel the need to say they missed Hedley last season when Joyce came in as a true freshman and impressed – he punted 43 times, averaging the aforementioned solid 43.8 yards per attempt (38th best in the nation for punters with 10 or more attempts). Fifteen were inside the 20, and seven went 50+ yards. Per Pro Football Focus he earned a really good 79.1 punt grade with 18 of his attempts fair caught. His hangtime average was 3.79 seconds, which barely ranked inside the nation’s top 100. So that is something he can improve.
THE PROJECTION
Joyce is one of the ACC’s top returning punters and could emerge as one of the best in the nation if he continues his progress as a sophomore. His leg strength is excellent, and we see him helping flip the field whenever it’s needed. While most fans are focused on Cam Ward and the potential of the explosive Hurricanes offense, having a solid punter and kicker can be the difference between winning and losing those close games that pop up several times a year. Miami’s in good hands (feet?) with Joyce.
THE JUMP HE NEEDS FROM SPRING TO FALL CAMP
Joyce has a strong leg … but as mentioned earlier his 3.79-second hang time barely ranked inside the nation’s top 100. So getting more air under the ball and letting Miami’s coverage units get downfield is something that needs improvement. With the full offseason to work on his craft we expect to see an even better Joyce in 2024.
