Chrissy Teigen reveals her son Miles' heartbreaking reaction to his shock diabetes diagnosis

Chrissy Teigen reveals her son Miles' heartbreaking reaction to his shock diabetes diagnosis

By MEIKE LEONARD

Chrissy Teigen has revealed what her son Miles, six, said to her after being told he he had diabetes last summer.

The schoolboy son of the model turned TV personality and her husband pop star John Legend, 45, was diagnosed with the deadly condition in July after falling ill at summer camp.

After he was hospitalised for an intestinal infection, doctors discovered Miles also had type 1 diabetes—which causes dangerously high blood sugar.

The couple, who also share daughters Luna, eight, Esti, two, and son Wren, 22 months, have said they're dedicated to finding out as much as they can about the life-changing condition.

In a recent interview with People magazine, the star, 38, opened up about her son's heartbreaking reaction to his diagnosis.

'He asked, "Why, why me? How come not Luna?",' she said. 'And to not have an answer for that is really weird.'

Recalling the run up to Miles' diagnosis, Teigen looked at times tearful.

'Last summer he was going to football camp like he does every summer—he loves football, he's a super active kid,' she told People.

'Somehow, during the camp, they all had gotten this infection. And for some reason, it really took Miles down harder than a lot of the other kids.

'His pain was incredible. He ended up in the hospital at Cedars for three full days.

'It was just, blood test after blood test. I'm not a doctor so I don't really know what they're doing.

'I'm just thinking they're helping him with this infection that he has.

'But the longer we stayed there, we were noticing that the doctors were kind of thinking something else was up.

'And then we were thrown into this world of chaos and having to learn so much all at once.

'It was a lot. I think what was the hardest part for us was the urgency.

'Our whole life is going to be dedicated to learning as much as we can to make sure Miles feels confident with the team he has around him.'

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

Insulin is a hormone the body uses to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy.

It is thought a combination of factors, such as genetics and some viruses, can trigger type 1 diabetes, although exactly why it occurs isn't fully understood.

And although type 1 diabetes usually appears during childhood or adolescence, it can also develop in adults.

In the short term, untreated diabetes causes a range of symptoms including weight loss, lethargy, infections, blurred vision, increased thirst and, subsequently, frequent urination.

The condition has no cure, but treatment is directed toward managing the amount of sugar in the blood using insulin, diet and lifestyle to prevent long-term complications.

Over time, if not well controlled, high blood sugar causes damage inside the body—dramatically increasing the risk of heart attacks, kidney failure, blindness and infections.

Individuals with type 1 diabetes require daily insulin therapy, either through injections or an insulin pump.

Chrissy Teigen revealed her son's type 1 diabetes diagnosis after posting a photo of him with an insulin monitor on his arm

'You noticed his type-1 diabetes monitor and extended so much love and encouragement in every way possible. I was, and am, so blown away by the kindness of this community, already' she wrote

Teigen announced her son's diagnosis with the condition in late July 2024 after posting a picture of the youngster with an insulin monitor on his arm.

'A lot of you noticed something a little special about a photo I posted a few days ago,' she wrote in an image posted on Instagram.

'Luna, Miles and I were celebrating Simone [Biles] and Team USA. Miles had his arm up, and soooo many of you reached out to say the most beautiful and incredible words I have ever witnessed on this platform.

The model wrote that it was 'a new world' for their family, who are 'learning so much on the fly'.

In the comment section of a more recent Instagram carousel of family snaps, Teigen promised a fan that she would help raise awareness about the condition.

She initially captioned the post explaining that her children keep the home 'alive', claiming it is 'perfect' that her kids are 'becoming funny little humans.

Underneath the post, a mother who also has a child battling Type 1 diabetes wrote: 'As a mom with such a large following, would you consider sharing more about Type 1? At least a bit to raise awareness? Sincerely, a fellow T1 mom.'

In response Teigen said: 'I definitely plan to! We are still learning over here ourselves
