Will Penn State have multiple first-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft?: Buy or sell
Penn State football had multiple first round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. Offensive tackle Olu Fashanu went No. 11 to the New York Jets before defensive end Chop Robinson went at No. 21 to the Miami Dolphins. It marked the second time that happened in the James Franklin era. All-time, that number stands at 10 for the storied program. Could the 2025 NFL Draft become the 11th time that at least two Penn State players go in the first round? It’s the topic of today’s buy or sell.
Reasons to buy Penn State having two or more first round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft
The simplest reason is that the Nittany Lions are all but set to have at least one, assuming Abdul Carter has the big season many expect him to at his new home on the field: Defensive end. The transition from linebacker to the first line of the defense has gone well, according to all available information. And, the Philadelphia native was already a good pass rusher to begin with. ESPN analyst Matt Miller’s latest early mock draft sends Carter to Cleveland at No. 16. Others, once they release their way-too-early look at who could fill the first 32 slots in next year’s Draft, will also put a first round grade on Carter.
So, with one in the books, obviously if you’re buying here, you see another Nittany Lion rising up Draft boards. Safety Kevin Winston Jr., is an obvious candidate to do so. He’s already considered one of college football’s best safeties. If he does not make it into the first round, a different junior edge rusher, Dani Dennis-Sutton, has all the tools to make pro personnel salivate. Then, there is the wild card option: Quarterback Drew Allar. He is draft eligible after the 2024 season. And, if you’re buying here, then he’s one of the possible first round picks you’re probably hanging your hat on, even if improvement will be necessary to simply start the conversation about the Ohio native leaving school early.
Reasons to sell the Lions having two first round draft picks in 2025
Simply put, if you wind up on this side of the proverbial fence, you probably agree that one of the players listed above will find a first round home, but you’re unsure on which one until seeing the action unfold this fall, yet still certain that only one of them will go on Day 1. Perhaps you find yourself thinking Carter and ‘DDS’ will eat into each other’s production, causing one to slip further than his abilities might suggest he should. You also probably believe, like the ESPN analyst Miller does, that only one safety will go in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and it isn’t guaranteed to be Winston.
Last but not least, if you’re selling here, you definitely don’t see Allar shooting into the first round conversation.
Where do we land on this buy or sell?
It’s against my better judgment, but I’m going to buy it here. And, it’s specifically due to thinking that Carter and Winston Jr., both find a day one home. Dennis-Sutton could. But, I feel much better about the other two doing so at this point in time. And, Carter seems to be the biggest lock of them all. If he wasn’t, this would be much easier to sell. But, to me, with one already practically assured, I’ll happily take the side that needs just one GM to fall in love with one Penn State player to win the debate.
