Dolphin Pulled From Monmouth Beach Creek Killed
MONMOUTH BEACH, NJ — The dolphin that had become stuck in a dry creek bed Tuesday morning in Monmouth Beach was rescued — and then euthanized once he was taken into care of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center."Upon examination, the underweight dolphin was found to be weak and lethargic, with lesions on multiple parts of his body," said the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in a Facebook post late Tuesday. "Abrasions were present on the flukes and pectoral fins. The dolphin’s weakened body condition, coupled with being stuck in the mud without water to support his body weight for an unknown period of time, made the dolphin’s prognosis for survival very poor. After veterinary assessment the decision was made to humanely euthanize the animal to prevent further suffering."It was 8 a.m. Tuesday when a passerby notified police that a dolphin was stuck in a creek off Meadow Avenue in Monmouth Beach. The dolphin was first discovered by someone walking their dog. It appears to have gotten stuck in the mud as the tide went out.The dolphin appeared to have an injury to its tail, said Monmouth Beach Police.Monmouth Beach Police officers, DPW and local residents joined forces to assist in the rescue. Officers and DPW members entered the creek and used a pump to keep the dolphin wet while waiting for employees from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center to arrive, said Monmouth Beach Police in this post.A crew and forklift from Schiavone Construction, who were working nearby, helped safely pulled the dolphin from the mud.The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is the only organization allowed by law to remove or help stranded dolphins, whales and seals in the state of New Jersey.
