Ryan Flores gives candid view of Tony Stewart role at Stewart-Haas, impact of Kevin Harvick retirement
Ryan Flores just shared his thoughts on Stewart-Haas Racing closing its doors at the end of the year. On the Stacking Pennies podcast with Corey LaJoie, the crew member for Ryan Blaney’s team admitted it would be hard to see NASCAR without Tony Stewart and Gene Haas.
“It’s tough to see it shut down, but it goes to show none of this stuff is going to last forever,” Flores said. “It’s a small blip in time and I wish nothing but the best for Gene and Tony. What they’ve done in the sport is great.”
Flores went on to explain what could have caused Stewart-Haas to cease operations. “Tony’s equity in the company was not funding, it was not money,” he explained. “It was always Gene’s money. His equity in the company was being the talent and winning races. That’s what they went and got him. Haas was spending the money, they just didn’t have the driver. And the only way to get somebody like Tony Stewart away from Joe Gibbs was to give him equity in the company.
“I think Tony stood up in front of everybody last week and said ‘Dude I don’t have the money to run this place.’ At that point in time when these guys are done spending the money on it, it’s done. I think he even said in the meeting pretty candidly to his guys like look, we’re running in the red. We’re not making money.”
Ryan Flores says Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer bring a lot to the table
Flores went on to talk about the impact of Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer had on Stewart-Haas. “The driver’s a big part of it and they’ve lost all their staple drivers, and now they have younger guys in there, but Kevin Harvick brings a lot to the table. Clint Bowyer brought a lot to the table,” Flores said. “You lose those guys and it makes it really tough.
Harvick was with Stewart-Hass from 2014 to 2023, and Bowyer was with the team from 2017 to 2020. Harvick won the Cup Series title in his first season with Stewart-Haas, and Bowyer won two races while he was with the team in 2018. Both are retired from full-time racing and can be seen covering NASCAR for Fox Sports.
