757Teamz girls volleyball Top 15: Grafton, StoneBridge, Cox, Norfolk Academy stay steady with week of wins
With only two losses coming from among the top-15 teams, this week’s girls volleyball rankings saw little change, with only one movement in the polls.
Both losses were suffered by No. 15 Bethel (7-4), although they came against a pair of ranked Peninsula District opponents: No. 8 Menchville and ninth-ranked Woodside.
The top four teams were in action on last Tuesday with all squads sweeping their opponents. Top-ranked Grafton secured sole possession of first place in the Bay Rivers District with a workmanlike win over New Kent, 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-18). Alana Washington and Kenzie Smith had 16 and 10 kills, respectively and Ally Burke added 29 digs with four aces, while Kaylie Klemm and Olivia Dela Cruz had a combined 27 assists.
Second-ranked StoneBridge defeated Gateway Christian, 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-9) as Ava Baker recorded seven kills. The Plumlee sisters, Nattie and Libbie, combined for 18 digs, and Camryn Weatherford had 21 assists, six aces and 16 service points.
No. 3 Cox won its Beach District matchup against Princess Anne, 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-16) as June Culicerto made 11 digs and Camdyn Milisitz added 10 kills.
In a Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools showdown, fourth-ranked Norfolk Academy swept Catholic 3-0.
Menchville remained undefeated in the PD at 11-0 with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-7, 25-14) victory over Warwick. Junior Caroline Clements recorded eight digs, two aces and six kills, including her 500th kill as a Monarch. Woodside is close behind at 11-1 in the district and overall, with its only loss a 3-0 shutout to Menchville on Sept. 12. The Newport News teams will meet up again on October 15 at the Monarch gym.
