History melds with art: Littleton’s Depot Art Gallery celebrates 63 Years

This August, Littleton’s Depot Art Gallery commemorates its 63rd anniversary, marking more than six decades of transformations and work from local artists. From Aug. 5 through Sept. 6, the gallery will host its anniversary show.
This year’s anniversary exhibition features 51 selected works, chosen from more than 90 submissions by 36 artists. The accepted pieces were chosen by juror Hazel Z. Weckbach, said Tippy McIntosh, a Depot Art Gallery artist who served as coordinator for the gallery’s anniversary show. Weckbach is an Englewood-born artist who is considered by peers as an “artist’s artist,” according to Weckbach’s website.
As the juror, Weckbach will judge submitted art work and then present the show’s awards at the Aug. 8 reception, which takes place from 5-7 p.m. Awards will be given for Best in Show, Second Place, Third Place and three Honorable Mentions.
Some of the standout works or artists featured in this year’s anniversary exhibition visitors can look out for are:
Teresa Maone’s oil painting, “Mariachi,” is “an outstanding example of advanced shadow value, illuminating the performer’s face. You can almost feel the dynamics of the music he is creating,” McIntosh said.
“The Apple,” is a watercolor piece by Joe Sturniolo that shows an image of a grandfather and his grandson, with the younger boy taking up most of the space.
“The relationship between the two, the older man and the boy, is powerful,” McIntosh said.
“Eathern Beauty” by Jacqueline Shuler is a painting that “presents beautiful, inviting colors that almost look like it could be under the surface of the earth,” McIntosh said.
Another piece that McIntosh highlights for its humorous depiction of art that can be admired by viewers of all ages is “A Good Donkey Laugh” by Pat Foster.

The gallery is uniquely housed in a historic 1888 Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad train depot — a building originally spared from demolition, relocated from Bega Park to 2069 W. Powers Ave., and thoughtfully restored as an arts hub.
The building was retired from railroad service in 1965, designated a historic landmark in 1969, and officially reopened as an art gallery in 1978 after extensive restoration and community efforts.
“Today, the depot is a thriving, flourishing and successful fine art gallery,” McIntosh said. “History melds with art. We have grown from 10 artists in 1962 to over 60 professional, acclaimed and recognized artists.”
The Littleton Fine Arts Guild, the nonprofit organization behind the Depot Art Gallery, was established in 1962 by 10 women painters. Today, more than 60 artists of all different mediums — including watercolor, photography and even jewelry — have joined the guild, said Peggy Deitz, a guild member.
McIntosh said the guild is a democratic structure with an elected president and board members that establish bylaws among other tasks that keep the organization running.
The physical gallery on Powers Avenue is owned by the City of Littleton and maintained by the Littleton Museum and the Littleton Fine Arts Guild.
Looking forward, McIntosh said Depot Art Gallery strives to “embrace the current trends in the art world today to bring in new techniques, new expressions and new artists.”
Artists interested in joining the Littleton Fine Arts Guild can apply online at depotartgallery.org. There is an interview process with the membership committee, during which applicants show their work for consideration.
“The Littleton Fine Arts Guild is an inclusive, respectful organization, intent on furthering exposure to fine art in the community and beyond,” McIntosh said.
