Nebraska Tuesday Fall Camp Nuggets: Defense continues to gel

Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White and linebackers coach Rob Dvoracek met with the media following Tuesday morning’s practice.
Here is a full recap of what they had to say…
Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White
***White said the defense was “working their butts off,” especially with the staff “throwing a lot of different situations at them this week.” He said he could see guys getting comfortable in “their groove,” including DeShon Singleton in his return from injury.
“He’s playing a high level right now,” White said.
***White said NU was managing Marques Buford’s workload in practice, but he still sees excellent strides in Burford returning to his old self.
***White praised Javin Wright, John Bullock, and Isaac Gifford for their level of pre-snap communication.
***Nebraska is “rotating every day” at cornerback, White said. Dwight Bootle, Ceyair Wright, and Jeremiah Charles were among those heavily in the rotation. Blye Hill (knee) is working his way back.
White added that Amare Sanders was “really standing out among those young guys.”
***Nebraska has used a lot of cross-training in the secondary under John Butler.
***Despite the injuries on Nebraska’s offensive line, White said it didn’t change how the defense attacks in practice. He said NU would always push to meet its “standard” in practice and never scale things back.
***White said Koby Bretz had moved to Rover and was “starting to find his groove” this offseason.
***White said the defense didn’t tackle very well in Saturday’s scrimmage. “It didn’t show up like it needed to, not with the group that we have. That’s something that’s bugging all of us.”
***White said he initially handled the new on-field helmet communication, but now Dvoracek has taken over those duties. Other coaches have been involved as well. Bullock, Gifford, Bretz, and Javin Wright have all worn the “green dot” with helmet mics this offseason.
***White said Vincent Shavers was young and still learning, but he couldn’t say enough about the freshman’s effort. He said NU has had to slow Shavers down at times in practice.
***White said Nebraska would likely turn its attention to UTEP prep around 10 days before the opener. They still have a lot to work on before they begin game planning.
***White said James Williams was “bigger, stronger, faster, and knows the defense.” Williams has been working on building his confidence to hold himself to a higher standard on the field.
White said when Williams goes out and plays, “he’s a special player.” But that doesn’t mean anything if he’s overthinking things and not going full speed.

Linebackers coach Rob Dvoracek
***Dvoracek said John Bullock’s experience had been invaluable in helping continue the progress the linebackers made last season.
***Dvoracek said Shavers was an “explosive” player who still had much to learn. “But he loves the game of football and is an explosive player. So we’ll see what happens.”
He said Shavers had all the traits of an immediate impact true freshman. “When you have those traits, obviously, you have to add the football part of it, too.” Shavers still has a lot to learn, but his skill set could get him on the field this season “when it’s right.”
***Dvoracek said Maverick Noonan had “done a nice job” returning from his injury. There has been some rust in getting back into the swing of things at Jack linebacker.
***Dvoracek said he’s constantly pushing Javin Wright to get better and master the linebacker position.
***Dvoracek said Stephon Thompson was “a natural football player” with “really natural instincts.” The biggest adjustment has been getting used to Nebraska’s standards on and off the field.
***Dvoracek said Vince Genatone was another “explosive” player who “had done a nice job” integrating into Nebraska’s defense.
***Dvoracek agreed “100 percent” with White’s assessment of the defense’s tackling during the Saturday scrimmage. “It goes back to the training and putting them in those situations” in practice.
***Dvoracek said Butler had been a “great” fit with the rest of the defensive staff. “We’re thankful to have him. It’s great for me.”
