Oconee Bass Fishing Report – July 15, 2024

Ronnie Garrison said Oconee fishing is pretty tough right now. Out of 12 boats in a club tournament, six anglers zeroed.
Oconee: Level: Full at 435. Temp: 85-87 degrees. Clarity: Clear.
Bass: Tournament angler Ronnie Garrison reports, “The weather was hot, sunny, and there was no breeze or current for most of day. Fishing was tough for the 12 members of the Potato Creek Bassmasters. We started at 5:30 and weighed in at 12:30 trying to beat the heat. It didn’t work!
“I had fun catching eight bass on my first stop on a grassbed. They slammed a spinnerbait that I ran parallel to the edge of some water willow. However, not one of them kept. Three were SO close I had to get a flashlight and look twice at three of them.

“I ended up in second place with four keepers weighing 5.16 pounds. One hit a spinnerbait, two came on Trick Worms, and one came on a jig. All were caught from grass. All but the jig fish were in the livewell before 8 a.m. It hit my jig at 11:30 a.m. in the same grassbed where I started.

“First place was Lee Hancock, who had four fish weighing 7.06 pounds, including big fish at 2.39 pounds. He said he caught two early around docks on a topwater popper, one on a rocky point on a walking bait and one 20 feet deep in brush on a green-pumpkin Zoom Mag II worm.

“Niles Murray was a close third with three weighing 5.14 pounds and was very close to big fish with a 2.37-pounder. He said he had two keepers on top at a lighted dock and one on a seawall on top before 8 a.m.

“Raymond English came in fourth with three keepers weighing 4.79 pounds. All his hit a Trick Worm.

“There were no limits and six zeros. You can catch some bass on top or on spinnerbaits by fishing early. They are small but fun to catch.”
