Blue Chips: Father of Top 100 OL Michael Carroll talks visit from entire Michigan offensive staff
I recently caught up with Mike Carroll, father of Top 100 offensive lineman Michael Carroll, to get his thoughts on Michigan and receiving a spring visit from the entire offensive staff.
Here are some highlights from the interview.
On the visit from the entire Michigan offensive staff:
“I feel like it was very impactful because each of them had something unique to bring to the conversation that was very persuasive and put Michigan in a good spot as far as how they treat their players and how they develop their players. It was my first time having a conversation with the new running backs coach (Tony Alford). I thought very highly of him. I had not had much interaction with the offensive coordinator (Kirk Campbell) either. Getting to know those guys a little bit better made it more comforting for my family and my son.”
On Michigan offensive line coach Grant Newsome:
“Although he’s a young coach, he did a great job with the tight ends. I’ve said this before, but he played the position of offensive line. You throw in the fact that you have a great mentor in Sherrone Moore with offensive line coaching, I think it’s a win-win combination.”
On what they asked the coaching staff during the meeting:
“We had some tough questions regarding sanctions. That’s the elephant in the room. They shared there was no further evidence. I don’t think they can say what may or may not happen. But I think they were as upfront and honest as they could be. We also discussed what the depth chart looks like and how he would fit in and why they want Mike to be part of their team.”
On what the Michigan staff pitched:
“Having the chance to be part of a winning team and winning culture. They really honed in on the academic part. The academics set apart Michigan from the rest of the pack.”
On how his son would project at Michigan:
“Based on his height and his length and the fact that he’s coachable could allow him to play multiple positions, which could make him more of a value to Michigan or wherever he decides. Like anything, the more things you can do well, the more opportunity you’ll have.”
On what they want to see on their official visit:
“He needs to be around some of the players more away from the coaches and parents to find out how he fits with him. That’s going to be key for him in his decision making process.”
