Report Unveils Chilling Details About Bristol Cops' Murders
BRISTOL, CT — As expected, state investigators said Wednesday a Bristol police officer's shooting and killing of a 35-year-old Bristol man in October 2022 was justified after the suspect murdered two Bristol police officers. In a newly released report, investigators detailed what happened and painted a picture of a deeply disturbed man in his mid-30s with a litany of personal, mental health, and financial problems. The Connecticut Office of the Inspector General Wednesday released a comprehensive, 66-page report stating exactly what happened the night of Oct. 12, 2022.That's when Bristol Police Officers Sgt. Dustin Demonte and Alex Hamzy were murdered after an ambush at a residence in town. The killer, Nicholas Brutcher, 35, was shot dead by Bristol Police Officer Alec Iurato, who was seriously injured after being hit with bullets, but eventually recovered. The incident stunned not only the Bristol community but the entire state as well, especially among the many state and local police departments keeping the peace.Connecticut Inspector General Robert J. Devlin released his report to the public Wednesday, clearing up many questions people had and divulging several details about what happened and why Brutcher turned into a cop killer that night."Based on the facts developed during the investigation, I have determined that Officer Iurato’s use of deadly force was justified to defend himself, others on the scene, and other responding Bristol police officers from serious injury or death at the hands of Nicholas Brutcher," wrote Devlin in his report.Another ruling by investigators is there wasn't enough evidence to charge Nicholas Brutcher's brother, Nathan Brutcher, 32, with any wrongdoing. While Nathan Brutcher's testimony during interviews was often conflicting and suspicious, wrote investigators, there was no evidence Nathan Brutcher was involved in his brother's plan to murder the policemen. The shooting happened near Nicholas Brutcher's house at 310 Redstone Hill Road and his parents' house nearby at 328 Redstone Hill Road.Four phasesAccording to Devlin's report, there are four elements to what happened that fateful night: • A barroom fight at a Bristol bar, Bleachers, 300 Middle St., Bristol.• A traffic stop after the fight in which police pulled over the suspect, a passenger, and the suspect's brother, Nathan Brutcher, 32, leading to an altercation between police and the brothers.• A phony 911 call at 10:32 p.m. that night was placed by Nicholas Brutcher, who claimed his brother was being overly aggressive after the night's prior issues and he wanted police to talk to his brother.• The ambush of the officers by Nicholas Brutcher at the residence after they responded to his 911 call.New detailsThe report goes into painstaking details about what happened that night, backed up by countless interviews with witnesses, friends, and acquaintances of the Brutcher brothers. But the report also chronicled several new elements of what happened that night and why the events of Oct. 12, 2022, transpired the way they did.Among them are:• Nicholas Brutcher had legally obtained 14 registered firearms, many of them assault weapons, including rifles and handguns.• Hamzy was shot 24 times by Nicholas Brutcher while Sgt. DeMonte was hit six times. Both were killed. The report states Nicholas Brutcher fired an AR-15 rifle 59 times in the ambush and a 9mm Glock handgun 24 times before he was felled by a single shot in the head/neck by Iurato.• The report states while Nicholas Brutcher was firing his guns at police, he was shouting, "How proud are you of me? How proud?"It is believed, the report states, Nicholas Brutcher's cries were directed to his parents, who lived in a nearby house.• The report states Nicholas Brutcher's personal life appeared to be unraveling, with demons and addictions taking a toll on his psyche, along with relationship and financial issues.According to the report, Nicholas Brutcher's ex-wife — with whom he had two children — was about to give birth to his former friend's child and Nicholas Brutcher had just learned a girlfriend of his may have been pregnant.Meanwhile, Nicholas Brutcher battled personal financial debt, anxiety, depression (for which he was on several antidepressants), a drinking problem, and he was struggling at his longtime place of employment, New England Liner Systems, 40 Westfield Drive, Plantsville (Southington).“The analysis of Nicholas Brutcher’s phone, interviews of family/friends, and a comprehensive review of all collected evidence provided insight into the stressors of Nicholas Brutcher’s life that likely contributed to the ambush attack on officers," reads the report. With Ethan Brutcher not being targeted for prosecution, barring any new evidence arising, Devlin's report likely ends a long saga about an incident that stunned a city.Investigators made it clear there was no justification for Nicholas Brutcher's actions that day, despite the myriad difficulties and stresses he was dealing with."An explanation of these stressors is not done to justify Nicholas Brutcher’s actions or place blame on others, but rather is done to understand the potential motivation to engage in a targeted act of violence against these officers," reads the report. Also included in the report are images of the homes involved in the incident, the weapons involved in the shootout, the crime scene, which included graphic images of blood stains in the driveway and Nicholas Brutcher's body after he was shot and killed. To read the full, 66-page report from the Connecticut Office of The Inspector General, click on this link (Reader discretion is advised)From Oct. 13, 2022: 'Police Shooting Suspects Identified, Slain Officers May Have Been Ambushed: PD'From Oct. 17, 2022: 'Body Cam Footage Shows Wounded Bristol Cop's Gunfight With Suspect'The article Report Unveils Chilling Details About Bristol Cops' Murders appeared first on Southington, CT Patch.
