Blue Lock Author Muneyuki Kaneshiro’s Top 4 Favorite Soccer Players are Neither Ronaldo Nor Messi
Blue Lock might be a sports manga/anime, but reading it is no less than watching a proper Shonen battle. The series beautifully blends the Shonen and sports genres to create soccer matches that can absorb you into them. Author Muneyuki Kaneshiro has created a savage plot that is ruthless to its characters.
In an interview, the author explained why Blue Lock focuses on the individual rather than team play and how he gave the series its unique touch. Additionally, he also revealed his favorite soccer player as a huge soccer fan.

While most soccer fans would immediately jump to either Ronaldo or Messi when asked about their favorite soccer player, the author and illustrator of Blue Lock didn’t. The author was exalted when asked if he watches games and revealed that he watches all kinds of matches, be it Bundesliga, Premier League, La Liga, or Serie A.

In an interview, Muneyuki Kaneshiro talked about his favorite players, and you might not have guessed any of them.
My first favorite player was Thierry Henry: I was mesmerized by his all-round wonderful game! I also like Álvaro Recoba, his dribbles and free-kicks at his best. Another favorite player is Mesut Özil, whose uninhibited game fascinates me. I seem to like players who are technicians and play beautifully. In addition, Erling Haaland is awesome!-Muneyaki Kaneshiro
Yusuke Nomura, the illustrator of Blue Lock, admitted that he often watches summaries of football matches on YouTube. He watches both domestic and foreign matches. He even claimed that while he has to draw unrealistic scenes in the manga, soccer players in real-life matches surpass even the manga panels, and each time he gets super excited.

However, the illustrator is not very familiar with soccer, but the one player who really impressed him was Oliver Kahn. Sometimes, he even pretends that he is putting the Blue Lock characters against Kahn and imagines if they could score a goal against him.
Muneyuki Kaneshiro Talks About the Ending of Blue Lock
When asked if the author knew how Blue Lock might end and in how many volumes, Kaneshiro replied that the rough draft was already fixed, and he had a vague ending in mind. However, he is still busy with the things that the individual characters are struggling with in the series. He admits that the story is nowhere near completion as a lot of the story is yet to unfold.

Unlike other series that focus on camaraderie and friendship, Blue Lock is all about the individual. It is about creating the biggest egoist striker, after all. There is no time for friendship in the series, and Kaneshiro explains why that is. According to the author, he faces difficulty with creating characters who live for others simply because he himself is not that kind of person.

The author then creates a mind-boggling scenario. People often call those who do certain deeds for others ‘selfless’. But if you look at it from another perspective, such deeds bring satisfaction to the same person and can thus be called selfish. So why not be selfish for oneself? Why not let your ego run free? These were the thoughts running through Kaneshiro’s mind while creating Blue Lock, which gave the series its unique plot.
Blue Lock manga is available to read on Viz Media, and its anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
