NBA MVP winner revealed after latest breathtaking season

By ERIC BLUM

Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has reportedly won his first NBA MVP award.

Gilgeous-Alexander has been hearing 'MVP' chants all season long as the leader of the Thunder, who are one of the best teams in the NBA.

The Canadian dynamo averaged 32.7 points per game this season, with 6.4 assists per game and a 51.9-percent field goal clip.

Gilgeous-Alexander winning his first NBA MVP award was the presumed move after his season, with it becoming reality on Wednesday, per ESPN.

The 26-year-old winning MVP continues the trend of a foreign-born player taking the honor dating back to 2018, when the last American to win it, James Harden, did so.

In the years since, Joel Embiid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Nikola Jokic have won a combined six MVPs, before Gilgeous-Alexander made it seven straight years without an American winner.

Before Antetokounmpo's MVP honor in 2019, only three foreign-born players had ever won the award a total of four times.

The first was Hakeem Olajuwon in 1994, then Steve Nash twice in 2005 and 2006, and followed up Dirk Nowitzki in 2007.

Gilgeous-Alexander becomes the second Canadian to win the award after Nash.

Gilgeous-Alexander is still playing this season, leading the Thunder in the Western Conference Finals against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The NBA has not officially announced Gilgeous-Alexander as the winner of the award but is expected to do so on Wednesday night.
