PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly running it back with their running back, all-world force of nature Saquon Barkley. Barkley has been signed to a two-year, $41.2 million extension, the largest in NFL history for a running back, according to ESPN and NFL Network. It comes on top of the existing three-year deal that he signed with the Birds last year, which was for only $37.7 million.It's the first high profile move of the offseason for the Birds, who have a core of players in their prime, backed by Barkley and Jalen Hurts, to potentially create a dynasty of their own in the years to come. Barkley will now be in Philly through 2028.The signing away of Barkley from the division rival New York Giants last offseason was perhaps the shrewdest move among many by now legendary general manger Howie Roseman. That Barkley came for such a cheap price and turned in such a phenomenal season was part of the reason the Eagles had the financial flexibility to put together an unstoppable force last season.Barkley's payday was well-earned. He rushed for more yards than any running back in a single year in NFL history, when accounting for the postseason, and nearly broke Eric Dickerson's long standing single season rushing mark. Of numerous show stopping moments that headed the highlight reels for months — the 200-plus yard games, the mid-air, backwards leap over a defender — perhaps nothing better encapsulated the power wielded by Barkley than the opening play of the Birds opening drive in the NFC championship game against Washington.
