Former Fentress County Rescue Squad Captain Indicted for Allegedly Stealing Over $20K from Agency

Former captain of the Fentress County Rescue Squad, Mark Crabtree, has been indicted after an investigation led by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office and aided by the Fentress County Sheriff’s Department brought to light a scheme where over $20,000 was stolen from his agency. WVLT reports that the indictment pins Crabtree with one count of theft over $10,000, one count of forgery over $10,000, and one count of fraudulent use of a credit or debit very apropos card over $1,000.
Over a year, from December 2022 to December 2023, Crabtree is accused of several means to fund his alleged embezzlement. According to WATE, he slashed $11,700 from the squad's funds by signing seven unauthorized checks to himself, in addition to $9,943 through numerous unauthorized ATM and over-the-counter withdrawals.
Moreover, in the compounding indictment, the former captain also reportedly charged the rescue squad's account with 18 unauthorized personal debit card purchases totaling $1,186.13, including everyday items such as cigarettes and fabric softener. As uncovered by the investigation, the theft amounted to a total of $22,829.13. WBIR includes a statement highlighting the mechanics of the embezzlement, wherein Crabtree signed his name along with the former treasurer’s name on the checks made out to himself.
Following the findings of misappropriation, Crabtree was stripped of his captaincy on January 27. In reflecting on the case, Comptroller Mumpower emphasized the importance of internal controls, stating, "Rescue squad officers should be sure that financial duties are separated between more than one person," as stated by WBIR.
