In an interview with Nicolle Wallace on MSNBC, Comey explained that he and his wife interpreted "86" as a restaurant term meaning to remove an item from the menu, and "47" as a reference to President Donald Trump being the 47th president.
He acknowledged that he did not perform a "gut check" before posting the image and expressed regret for the distraction it caused. Comey emphasized that the post was "totally innocent" and not intended as a threat.
