Voices only: ‘My God, How Wonderful Thou Art’
Welcome to Voices only. We recently got a request from reader Carole Gabrielson for a song that’s not familiar to me — “My God, How Wonderful Thou Art.” Frederick William Faber wrote the song, first published in 1848.
I didn’t know if I would be able to find an a cappella version of the song, but I did come across one version by the choir of the Polk Street Methodist Church in Amarillo, Texas. You’ll see some choir robes and a few other things we’re not accustomed to in Churches of Christ. And there are a few organ notes at the very beginning, but in the song itself the only instrument you’ll hear is the amazing voice of humans.
(You may also notice the offering plates — something we’re definitely familiar with in Churches of Christ —making their way through the congregation during the hymn.)
Here are the lyrics:
My God, how wonderful Thou art, Thy majesty how bright,
How beautiful Thy mercy seat, in depths of burning light!
How dread are Thine eternal years, O everlasting LORD;
by prostrate spirits, day and night, incessantly adored.
How wonderful, how beautiful, the sight of Thee must be,
Thine endless wisdom, boundless pow’r, and awful purity.
O how I fear Thee, Living God, with deepest, tend’rest fears,
and worship Thee with trembling hope, and penitential tears.
Here’s a version performed by the Boston Choral Ensemble:
Yet I may love Thee too, O LORD, Almighty as Thou art;
for Thou hast stooped to ask of me the love of my poor heart.
No earthly father loves like Thee, no mother e’er so mild,
bears and forbears, as Thou hast done with me, Thy sinful child.
Father of Jesus, love’s reward, what rapture will it be,
prostrate before Thy throne to lie, and ever gaze on Thee!
