Suspect in Custody After Santa Barbara City College Put on Lockdown Due to ‘Active Assailant’
[Update: Fri., Oct. 4, 2024 8:50 p.m.] Santa Barbara Police say that one suspect is in jail following an altercation on SBCC’s West Campus that caused the college to go into lockdown Friday afternoon.
At around 3 p.m. on Friday, police received multiple 9-1-1 calls from the SBCC community regarding a verbal altercation between two subjects on SBCC’s West Campus, according to a press release from police. After one of the subjects was seen wielding scissors, the college was placed on “active assailant” lockdown. Several police officers arrived on campus shortly after and detained the two subject. The officers determined the subjects were a acquaintances and that the altercation was an isolated incident, and the lockdown was subsequently lifted.
One of the subjects, whose identity has not been released, was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon (a felony) and witness dissuasion (a misdemeanor).
[Original Story] Santa Barbara City College spokesperson Jordan Killebrew reported that the two suspected assailants that gave rise to a campus-wide “active assailant” lockdown sometime after 3 p.m. this Friday have been taken into custody by officers with the Santa Barbara Police Department.
Killibrew, being in lockdown himself, was not in a position to provide more details. He did say that one of the alleged assailants was seen with a knife in front of the library. Under what circumstances, he said, was as yet uncertain.
SBCC issued a follow-up notification at 3:27 p.m. that the threat is contained and the lockdown has been lifted.
This is a developing story. Check back for additional details as they become available.
