A Ghosts season 4 update spoils how Alexander Hamilton arrives in the story, but the reveal was actually a bit disappointing. Brandon Scott Jones' Isaac Higgintoot character, a Founding Father who died of dysentery during the Revolutionary War, has a long-standing feud with Alexander Hamilton. The sitcom finally announced it would feature Hamilton in the Ghosts season 4 cast, an exciting update, despite the show failing to procure Utkarsh Ambudkar's longtime friend Lin-Manuel Miranda for the part. Many hoped Miranda would play Hamilton in Ghosts due to Miranda's famously playing the titular role in his Hamilton Broadway musical.
The sheer idea of Hamilton appearing in Ghosts season 4 made us wonder how he would factor into the story. It was most exciting to think that Hamilton would join the other spirits at Woodstone Mansion as a ghost, somehow making it to confront his rival in the flesh (or lack thereof). However, the update teased that Nat Faxon's appearance would let down some of the more ambitious theories of how Hamilton would factor into the Ghosts season 4 story, most involving the various ways that his ghost could make it from Manhattan to the New York countryside.
Alexander Hamilton Will Appear In A Flashback In Ghosts Season 4
The Official Ghosts CBS Instagram Account Gave A Sneak Peek

An Instagram reel from the official CBS Ghosts account gave a sneak peek of Brandon Scott Jones and Nat Faxon's big appearance as Isaac Higgintoot and Alexander Hamilton, respectively. However, the reveal was actually underwhelming. In the short video, Isaac arranges candlesticks on a table as Hamilton walks in. The corresponding audio is a soundbite of Dance Mom's Abby Lee Miller saying: "I want to sit back and relax and enjoy my evening. When all of a sudden, I hear this agitating, grating voice." In the clip, Isaac isn't donning his typical Ghosts outfit from the CBS series.
The viral audio clip simply implies that Isaac isn't happy to see his foe. Jokes aside, there's hidden meaning in the reel. Isaac is wearing a white shirt and a brown vest, and the blouse lacks the standard frills of his usual garb. Furthermore, Isaac isn't wearing the wool overcoat he sports around the clock in the sitcom. One of the core elements of Ghosts lore is that ghosts can't change or modify their clothes after they die, so Isaac's different outfit signals the moment is in the past. Therefore, Isaac's garments imply that Alexander Hamilton will only appear in a flashback.
Why Spirit Hamilton Is A Better Debut For Isaac's Rival
Alexander Hamilton's Ghost Appearance Is A Better Story
While a flashback will likely help the audience understand the cause of Hamilton and Higgintoot's rivalry, Hamilton's appearance as a ghost would be more satisfying. Faxon's guest character appearing as a spirit would allow him to interact with the other ghosts, making Hamilton's story more than just a facet of Isaac's past. Season 4 has a laser focus on Isaac, and while it's fun to see the Revolutionary War ghost evolve, Hamilton appearing as a ghost would have expanded the show's lore and allowed all the Woodstone spirits to get to know another Founding Father.

Hamilton's appearance in a flashback will reveal more history, but we've also already seen a flashback from Isaac's past when Neil Crone appears as Ben Franklin in Ghosts season 2, episode 8, "The Liquor License." Watching the gentlemen quarrel during the Revolutionary War era certainly won't make for a dull occasion. Still, Hamilton's experience in the story being limited to the historical timeline is a letdown to some of the bigger aspirations for how he could factor into the series as a spirit arriving at Woodstone, allowing him to reflect on his death.
Can Alexander Hamilton Still Appear As A Ghost?
Hamilton's Flashback Could Set Up A Present-Day Story

Yet Alexander Hamilton could still appear as a spirit. According to the update, Faxon will feature in a flashback to Isaac's past because the Revolutionary War Captain will be donning something more casual than his usual garb. However, that's just what we know for sure. One could still hold out hope that season 4 flashes back to Isaac's past to explain a moment in the present, such as Hamilton's arrival at Woodstone. Seeing Hamilton featured in a flashback and a present-day moment would actually be even better — allowing the two timelines to complement each other — and it's worth hoping for.
Not playing out Isaac's big failure alongside Hamilton, with Higgintoot confronting the fact that he's just a historical footnote, would be a missed opportunity for Ghosts.
Having died nearby in New York City, Hamilton's appearance at Woodstone is conceivable in light of Pete's (Richie Moriarty) new geographically unbound ghost power. Hamilton's ghost could challenge Isaac's vow to be a better person, adding fresh and timely conflict to the story. Hamilton's absence from the present-day Woodstone timeline means that Isaac doesn't have to explain his failed biography to his rival, which Sasappis (Román Zaragoza) turned into a fictional vampire story. Not playing out Isaac's big failure alongside Hamilton, with Higgintoot confronting the fact that he's just a historical footnote, would be a missed opportunity for Ghosts.
