Should a Mom Be Villainized For Going to Disney World Without Her Kids?

A Disney travel agent is blasted for visiting the park without her children, but shouldn't adults be able to have fun too?Fact checked by Sarah ScottFact checked by Sarah ScottCheck out this new imagining of a Disney fairytale: A hardworking mom goes to Disney World without her children. The mom has the most magical time until an evil witch systematically destroys her on social media.Only this isn't a fairytale. This is the true story of a Disney travel agent who shares content on Instagram using the handle @maddiesmickeymagic. She was promptly villainized online for daring to “let loose” at the Orlando theme park sans her small ones after posting that she enjoyed a solo trip to Disney World.

To be fair, the mom and creator admitted to feeling some guilt, but the crux of her post was that she had a great time.“I love taking family vacations to Disney, and I do 99% of the time!” the mom captioned her share. “But every now and then, it’s so nice to let loose and be a kid without the kids.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Madalyn Jade Monaghan (@maddiesmickeymagic)
What's Wrong With An Adult Trip to Disney? The comments section of her post filled up rapidly with evil stepmother vibes.“Adults going to Disney without kids is sad,” sniped one hater, while another simply wrote, “Embarrassing.” Yet another commenter said, “Grownups going to Disneyland without kids is just weird.” There were countless comments as poisonous as that apple Snow White should never have taken a bite out of. But soon, other commenters rescued the creator with their support.“I hope you had an awesome time!” one declared. “Mommas deserve time to themselves.” And, this point was made again and again: “Just because you are a mom does not mean you don't get to enjoy your life!” Another commenter pointed out that many experiences at Disney are adult-oriented, including drinking around the world at Epcot. Reasons To Go To Disney Without KidsWith that aspect in mind, in a follow-up post, the travel agent shared her top four reasons for going to Disney without her kids. First, since she is a Disney travel agent, going alone allows her to focus on doing research for her clients. The creator added it’s hotter than heck in Orlando in August, so she didn’t want to subject her kids to that. As someone who has taken my kids to the parks in the dead of summer in Florida, I can attest to how miserable it can be. You spend thousands of dollars to hear your kids complain about how uncomfortable they are—fun, right? View this post on Instagram A post shared by Madalyn Jade Monaghan (@maddiesmickeymagic)
Another reason the mom and creator went to the parks without the tots in tow? She loves roller coasters, but they don’t, so this trip enabled her to get her big rides on.Then there’s the cocktail onslaught available on-site. Three of the Disney Parks (all except Magic Kingdom)—as well as Disney Springs—feature fun drinking experiences, which you can’t fully embrace if you’re also ‘sitting the small ones. Finally, the Disney lover pointed out she works hard at her job and parenting, and taking time for yourself isn’t exactly a sin.“Disney was made for everyone to enjoy! I know it’s not everyone’s idea of an adults-only vacation but it’s our happy place!” the mom captioned a reel of video of herself embracing her inner child. You Do YouHere are my two cents on the solo Disney vacation bashed ‘round the world: I know tons of adults who visit the parks without their kids. While I have not yet done this, I dream about it! When we take our family to Disney, we’ll always see couples and friends having a blast on their own. “One day!” I promise my husband. For now, it would be too heartbreaking for our 6- and 3-year-olds if we left them at home to visit Mickey. As for our teenagers? They would be more than happy to do their own thing at the parks or at home if we wanted adult time.Everyone’s situation is different, so it’s impossible to say what would make sense for you. Maybe going to be around a bunch of boisterous kids who aren’t yours would feel like a drag if you actually had time to get away alone. But if skipping around the parks in Mickey ears and getting to do whatever you want without having to consider a million other opinions and feelings feels freeing to you, and is going to fly with your family, why get judged for it? As many commenters noted, parents are allowed to have fun, too. Now if only we could get our kids to understand that… For more Parents news, make sure to sign up for our newsletter!
