FC Arizona Defeats Lions United FC 2-0
By FC Arizona
FC Arizona secured a 2-0 win over Lions United FC on Mental Health Awareness Night. The festivities began well before kickoff with an emphasis on mental health during the month of Mental Health Awareness. Fans lined up to listen to the live pregame concert by Zero Reasons, participate in the inflatable soccer challenge, visit with vendors, and enjoy tacos. A special procession saw a live rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, and OneAZ Credit Union Senior Vice President of Marketing Liza Buchanan delivering the game ball. The environment was electric when the referee blew the whistle as blue smoke filled the air and the match kicked off.
This high intensity match saw its first set of real action at the 20th minute when the referee showed FC Arizona’s Gabe Waters the first yellow card of the night. Not long after, in the 31st minute, Glendale would get their own yellow card. The score would open up at the 33rd minute with an FC Arizona goal. A through ball along the sideline found leading scorer Justin Provenzano as he put it in the back of the net. The first half would end with FC Arizona leading 1-0.
With a fierce second half ahead of them, FC Arizona lost team captain Marco Afonso to injury in the 58th minute. Afonso would return to the match to add a touch of class in his assist for FC Arizona’s second goal in the 72nd minute. A throw-in along the sideline would find Afonso open, and he lifted his head and crossed the ball towards the far post to find teammate Parker Orr for the goal.
FC Arizona would go on to receive one final yellow card in the 80th minute. The referee blew his whistle after stoppage time, and the match concluded 2-0 in favor of the home team.
“This is a huge win for us,” said FC Arizona head coach Alejandro Aguilar. “This really solidifies our spot on the table and almost ensures our playoff hopes, and everything that was done here tonight adds to our love for our game and our community. We are very happy with the overall outcome.”
FC Arizona continues their season against the Las Vegas Legends on June 1st at Cristo Rey St. Viator College Preparatory High School in Las Vegas, Nevada.
