Alison Hammond has revealed she decided to lose weight after being shamed while flying.
On Friday’s episode of This Morning, Alison and her co-host Dermot O’Leary were leading a discussion about whether plane passengers should pay for extra seats after a photo of an overweight man sparked heated debate.
Earlier this week a photo of a man circulated online, showing him struggling to get into his aisle seat during a flight from Helsinki to Copenhagen.
The person who posted it said the larger passenger was ‘protruding into the aisle’, forcing fellow travellers to squeeze around him on their way to the bathroom.
When speaking about the matter, Alison, 49, shared how she had faced similar experiences in the past.
‘I was nearly 28 stone, I will be honest with you and I was classified as morbidly obese and I used to buy an extra seat (on planes),’ she shared.

‘Every single time I flew I would always buy an extra seat because I didn’t want to put anyone in a situation where I was touching them because I was made to feel uncomfortable on one occasion.
‘I was just edging into their seat, and they asked to move and what they (the flight attendants) did in the end was actually move me to first class because the guy was being so rude.’
However, Alison said ‘from that moment’ she started buying two seats and would also take an extension too.

‘It was uncomfortable and that is one of the reasons I lost weight – in order to not go through that,’ she shared.
After now losing weight the TV presenter said she no longer needs to spend extra money on another seat when flying but admitted ‘not everybody can afford’ to do what she used to.
‘I was in a situation where I was morbidly obese, and I had to lose weight. It was a lot harder for me at that time,’ she said.

Alison then called on airlines to cater for people who are heavier, adding obesity was a ‘disability’ and arguments telling people to ‘just lose weight’ were simplistic.
In 2022 Alison broke down on This Morning when speaking to a viewer about obesity, sharing she’d battled it ‘all her life’ and she wanted people to realise it is a ‘disease.’
Soon after she told Lorraine Kelly and daughter Rosie’s What If? Podcast that she faced constant trolling.
Alison added that while she ‘might die a little sooner’ because of her weight, she was still determined to ‘live life to the fullest’.
This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1.
