Her Husband Eats An Abnormal Amount Of Food And They Spend Around $1,000 A Month On Groceries For Just The Two Of Them
Yesterday, this woman curled up on the floor of her bathroom to cry over the abnormal amount of food her husband consumes.
She’s 32, and he’s 34, and they never had problems with his eating habits until after she began her residency.
Now, her husband has always had an incredible appetite, and his parents admitted he came close to causing them to file for bankruptcy as they tried to keep up with feeding him through his teen years.
Her husband loves to go to the gym, and he normally consumes 9,000 to 10,000 calories a day, though he’s still super fit.
When she has a day off, she does a grocery run with her husband. She sadly was hospitalized along with 100 kids as a child when her school had a food handling problem.
Due to that scary experience, she has developed an aversion to certain foods, which she is currently working with her psychiatrist to manage.
“We buy huge quantities; our grocery bill works out to be about $1k/month (we don’t have kids),” she explained.
“Recently, all of this food has been disappearing within 5-6 days. He drinks about a gallon of milk a day, half a box of cereal, an entire package of chicken, multiple large tubs of yogurt, and entire blocks of cheese- this doesn’t even include his midnight snacks. This is one day.”
“I can sometimes get in a bite or two of the food I bought before I find the empty packages in the pantry the next day. It’s almost insult to injury that he puts the empty packages back instead of in the garbage.”

When she comes home from work, it’s common for her to be greeted by a fridge full of nothing. Unfortunately, she’s so wiped out that many days she can’t even manage to order takeout.
Her hospital does provide meals for her when she’s working, but many times, she’s too busy to eat while at work.
She pleaded with her husband to get checked out, as she was worried he might have thyroid problems or maybe even a rare disorder such as Prader-Willi.
He was hesitant to see someone but relented in the end. His lab work came back completely normal, which shocked her.
She works approximately 80 hours a week, so then she thought perhaps he was stress eating, but he says her hours don’t bother him or upset him in the least.
“The biggest issue I’m facing is that I’m constantly coming home to an empty fridge/cabinet,” she added.
“The best I can do is ketchup with salt and pepper because of how efficiently he clears out any food item.”
“He has tried to cook for me in the past but gets fidgety waiting for me to come home (the most recent example I have is him preparing two large pans of lasagna- he ate it all in one sitting before I even got home).”
She’s attempted to purchase groceries that are only for her, but her husband goes through them anyway and comes up with excuses as to why he did this.
He is medicated for severe ADHD, so she can look past his thoughtlessness, but she’s resorted to writing him notes to leave her food alone, and that doesn’t even stop him.
She’s contemplating buying a second fridge and installing a lock on it, but she’s not positive that will work, and she hates to be so extreme.
“I’m at a total impasse of what to do now,” she continued. “I’ve asked my colleagues both for medical and personal advice, and they’ve expressed concerns that he’s doing this maliciously if we can’t find a reason otherwise.”
“He’s been the light of my life and is a fantastic partner in so many ways outside of the food situation, so I’m at a loss. But coming home today to find the one bag of veggie straws I asked him to save for me gone just broke me.”
What advice do you have for her?
