Westfield City Council rejects relaxed rules on electronic message signs
WESTFIELD — The City Council last week voted overwhelmingly against a proposal to relax the permitting requirements for electronic message signs. The measure had been recommended by both the Planning Board and by the council’s own Zoning, Planning and Development Committee. Councilor Ralph Figy, chair of ZPD, said the Planning Board had sought to codify its practice of granting exceptions to allow message boards at municipal buildings; update the ordinance to address sign types not envisioned when it was written; and clarify wording giving by-right status for electronic signs in Business A, Business B and Industrial zones.
