Hickory FC Defeats Greenville United 1-0 in Southeast Conference Action
By Greenville Untied
Greenville United faced Hickory FC on Saturday, May 11 at John Paul II Catholic High School at 7:00 pm. It was the first conference match of the season for Greenville United.
Lots of questions were in the air following Greenville United’s unbeaten regular season in 2023. More questions arose when Greenville United switched to the Southeast Conference.
Hickory FC, a club in their inaugural season, came into the conference as an unknown quantity. Hickory FC defeated last year’s national runners-up in Apotheos FC, and that was followed by a defeat to longstanding club Appalachian FC. This left Greenville United with a lot to think about going into the match.
The match began with relentless pressure and crisp passing from Greenville United. Lots of quick counter attacks from Hickory FC were stopped in their tracks by a strong Greenville United defense. Hickory would not be discouraged and continued to apply pressure on the counter at every opportunity. For the first 30 minutes it was Greenville who was the aggressor, hitting the woodwork twice in the first half. Hickory found their second wind in the last 15 minutes and had a few chances to score that were ultimately unsuccessful. Halftime would arrive with the score tied at 0-0.
The second half reflected much of the first half with immense pressure from Greenville United being met with relentless counter attacks from the Hickory offense. Lots of fouls on both sides would lead to a high intensity match with emotions running high on both sides. The match would remain 0-0 up until the 90th minute. Hickory’s Thomas Pollaci received the ball following a tackle from a Greenville United defender, and he struck with a curling shot that dipped in the top left corner over the head of the Greenville United keeper. This would give Hickory FC the 1-0 victory.
Greenville United Director of Football Aaron Okwei shared his thoughts on the match.
“Both teams played well,” Okwei said. “A very competitive match that highlighted the skill on both sides. In soccer, the better team doesn’t always get the victory, but Hickory FC did what they had to do to get the job done. Taking this loss in stride and looking forward to the next one.”
