Get Ready for Hurricane Season With These 5 Costco Buys

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30 every year, and NOAA is predicting that this year is going to be a bad one. Although we're already in it, it's not too late to prepare for the next big hurricane -- you've got months left to go before the season is over. That's why I've made a list of some of the best Costco buys that can get you ready for whatever hurricane season throws at you.1. LanternsWhen the power goes out, you have options. You can sit there, in the dark, and be sad until the sun comes back out. Or you can try to light the place with candles, but it's hard to know how long a power outage will really last -- and they're a fire hazard, to boot. The better option is to buy some LED lanterns. I got some of these for myself a few years back because I live in a place prone to tornadoes and ice storms, both of which can bring the power grid to a screeching halt.Costco carries a couple of really nice lanterns, including the Duracell 2000 Lumen Tri-Power Lantern ($24.99) and the GE 1500 Lumen Dual Powered LED Lantern ($27.99). Both can be charged with a USB cable, but also will take optional batteries, which Costco also sells. It's kind of a win-win, really.2. Power banksPower banks are hugely underestimated tools until you can't find anywhere to charge your phone but your car. This is a terrible idea when there's no certainty of when the power will be back on.However, power banks can hold a lot of phone charges, they store easily, and you can carry them around and recharge anywhere there's power, like a library or a public bathroom. They're also great for camping, so you don't have to just pull them out in an emergency.Costco offers basic options like the Anker MagGo Magnet Power Bank with Kickstand in a two-pack for just $39.99. Each unit will hold 5,000 mAh of charge, which can charge one newer phone up to 16 additional hours. However, if you want something a bit bulkier that can do more than just charge your phone, the Type S Portable Jump Starter & Power Bank with Emergency Multimode Floodlight might be better, with 8,000 mAh of capacity on sale now for just $59.99.3. Camping mealsHurricanes aren't as much fun as camping (or maybe they are if you really hate camping), but you can still eat pretty well during the bad weather and manage the clean-up afterward with camping meals. You'll need some bottled water to make them work, but you can get really tantalizing bulk meals like chicken curry, beef stroganoff, turkey chili, and even cookies from brands like ReadyWise and OMEALS.If you feel a little more need to be ready for Armageddon, Costco offers Augason Farms Emergency Food Supply, which is enough food to feed one person for 30 days, for just $120. Each five-gallon bucket holds 226 servings of food and will last for up to 30 years.4. LaddersHurricanes are dramatic and tend to create a lot of mess at all levels of your home. You definitely will need a ladder to fix the gutters, or drag limbs off your roof, among other tasks in the days following the event. If you only buy one ladder, let it be a multi-position ladder like the Little Giant MegaLite+ 18 ft. Reach Ladder with Leg Levelers. For just $189.99, you'll have a ladder that can do it all, no matter where you need to get to, and that's pretty handy when you don't really have the time, energy, or interest in dragging out three different ladders to get to all the things you need to reach. When you're done, just fold it back up and it'll easily store pretty much anywhere.5. Whole home standby generatorsIf your home has natural gas or liquid propane plumbed to it, one of the nicest things you can do for yourself is to install a whole home generator before the next hurricane comes. Not only will it continue to provide your home with power and keep your devices charged despite the weather, critical electronics like your work computer -- or medical devices -- won't miss a beat or be subject to brownouts or other power fluctuations.Costco offers installed Generac generators that come with a 10% Costco Shop Card, as well as Honeywell generators complete with transfer switch that you can have installed by your favorite electrician, starting at just $4,899.Costco has your back this hurricane seasonStorm prep is not the most fun you can have on your weekend off. But at least if you're doing it with Costco, you know you won't blow your budget, and you'll likely find some really cool stuff to help you pass the time while storms rage outside.Top credit cards to use at Costco (and everywhere else!)
