Chicago's 31st Street Beach Implements 9PM Curfew and Elevated Security Measures Amid Recent Violence
Chicago's 31st Street Beach has seen its days of festivities cut short by violence, leading to increased calls for heightened security, especially as July 4th approaches. The beach, which sits comfortably in the 4th ward, has unfortunately been the locus of multiple violent incidents, including shootings and a stabbing, prompting Ald. Lamont Robinson to advocate for a temporary curfew adjustment. In a statement obtained by NBC Chicago, Ald. Robinson expressed a firm stance, "Enough is enough. We have to make sure we have a safe beach for all our beachgoers."
After speaking with the police this week, Ald. Robinson pushed for the earlier curfew, hoping to deter the violence that has often taken place at or after sunset. Additionally, as seen just days before, after another incident near the shoreline, added security measures including barrier enhancements and bag checks are also on the alderman's list of requests, as noted in an article by Block Club Chicago.
According to Sabha Abour, the alderman's chief of staff, the 4th Ward office has also reached out to Chicago Public Schools to close lots adjacent to the former Aramark site, as typically, the lots become gathering spots. Beachgoers should be aware of new "No Parking" signs and expanded residential parking permit zones. Robinson also specified that the enforcement of loitering laws should be stricter, addressing the heart of the issue, explained by Robinson to NBC Chicago, "The issue is when the beach closes, we have to be able to enforce the closure and make sure there’s no loitering that’s happened after hours."
Abour advised the public to "be good neighbors: walk around the beach, be alert. And if you see an incident about to happen, step in to deescalate, but only if you’re comfortable," as stated by the Block Club Chicago.
