Caitlin Clark sidelined with Fever announcing shock injury

By Ryan Dunleavy

How Knicks can manage OG Anunoby against relentless Pacers | The Injury Report

It turns out that Caitlin Clark is not unbreakable.

The face of the WNBA has suffered the first worrisome injury of her career and will miss at least the next two weeks due to a left quadriceps strain, the Indiana Fever announced Monday.

Clark played in 183 straight regular-season and postseason games over her four seasons at Iowa, plus her full rookie season with the Fever, plus the first four games of this season. Her durability streak actually covers seven-plus years.

Either Clark was playing through the injury Saturday in a 90-88 loss to the Liberty, or it happened on the controversial final play of the game, when she was stripped of the ball by Natasha Cloud while going up for the potential game-winning 3-pointer as time expired.

An angry Clark swung her fist through the air in frustration and sought out officials with a bewildered look on her face.

Fever head coach Stephanie White later said that she thought Clark was fouled and ripped the officiating in general for the free-throw disparity between the Fever and their opponents over the last three games.

The Fever are off to a 2-2 start but will be without Clark for at least four games, beginning Wednesday against the Mystics and including two games in the Commissioner’s Cup on June 3 and June 7.

Clark is averaging 19 points and a league-best 9.3 assists per game for the Fever, who had an active offseason that included hiring White and acquiring battle-tested veterans to make their run at winning a title while the league’s reigning Rookie of the Year is driving up the popularity of women’s basketball.

Clark had been in a mini-shooting slump, making 10-of-29 shots overall and 2-of-16 from 3-point range in past two games.

The Fever said that more updates on Clark’s status will be provided after she is re-evaluated.

Clark missed a preseason game earlier this month due to a left leg injury that she considered to be “just a little tightness” at the time, stemming from “probably just a little too much basketball.”

It’s unclear if that injury is related to her current quad issue.

The last time that Clark missed a game in which the score mattered was Nov. 28, 2017, when she had a badly sprained ankle during her sophomore year at Dowling High School in Iowa, according to USA Today’s Christine Brennan.

The Fever tried to avoid this scenario by bubble-wrapping Clark during the preseason.

“She’s been limited in practice, so we’re still very cautious about working her way back and really letting her body kind of tell her how much she’s able to do,” White said last month. “We’re really relying on the training staff, and she’s making great progress. And that’s what we need, just to make sure that we’re super cautious.”
